Job description

The School of the Physical Sciences, along with the University Information Services (UIS), wishes to appoint a Head ofIT and Digital Transformation for the School. This exciting new role will define both the vision and strategy for IT Services across the School's eight academic Departments and two Institutes: Pure Maths (DPMMS), Applied Maths (DAMTP), Astronomy, Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science & Metallurgy, Earth Sciences, Geography, the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences, and the Scott Polar Research Institute. The School's IT services are critical in supporting the world-leading teaching and research work of Departments, as well as their administration. The postholder will drive collaboration across the School's community of IT Professionals, supporting departmental staff. Along with UIS, they will drive forward the delivery of a world-class platform of IT infrastructure and services, promoting standardisation across the School as appropriate. The postholder will be the School's key link with the UIS, University IT governance, and the wider University IT community, influencing the provision of centrally managed services, setting service expectations and ensuring that they meet the School's evolving needs for support in teaching, research and administration. The postholder will also take forward wider University IT initiatives. This is a strategic role, where success will depend upon the creation and maintenance of strong relationships with a wide range of stakeholders who will include academic leaders, senior administrators and IT staff at many levels in both the School and the UIS. We are looking for someone with proven experience in the management and planning of IT services, and the associated management of staff and resources - ideally gained in a highly devolved and committee-driven organisation. Experience of IT management in a Higher Education or Research environment would be advantageous. This role presents a major opportunity for a successful IT professional to make a real difference to a leading research-intensive University. If you would like an informal chat about this role, please contact Dr Jim Bellingham, Secretary of the School of the Physical Sciences (SecSPS@admin.cam.ac.uk) or Richard Hey, Deputy Director - UIS (Richard.Hey@uis.cam.ac.uk).
