About the role:
Heaton is a TrainCare Centre, that maintains trains for Northern and other 3rd parties. Over 200 colleagues work at the depot on a 24 hour, multiple shift rota.
Working in the role of SHEC Advisor, you will report into our Health & Safety Business Partner for Engineering and will be primarily based at Heaton with the occasional visit to other TrainCare Centres across the North, to support the wider team.
One of your key areas of focus will be to provide comprehensive occupational Health and Safety support to Managers, to facilitate continuous improvement in safety standards and performance. All the while, you’ll be promoting and implementing SHEC best practices within the Engineering Function.

Key responsibilities:
This is a varied and challenging position, but here’s a taste of the key elements to this role:
- Coaching and assisting local managers and frontline colleagues to develop their Health and Safety knowledge, awareness and risk perception
- Ensuring the effective implementation of safety management system
- Providing advice on and carrying out risk assessments
- Supporting managers to investigate significant incidents and accidents to ensure root causes are identified, and lessons learnt
- Leading Red or Amber level accident/incident investigations as and when required
- Participating in and project managing (when required) SHEC development projects on a business-wide basis
- Assisting with or conducting SHEC audits (in accordance with OHSAS18001/ISO 14001 or other audits within area of competence) throughout the business and on suppliers, as required
- Providing support and guidance for external SHEC audits
- Producing detailed audit reports highlighting deficiencies, areas of non-compliance, and areas of best practice, and communicating the results throughout the business
About you:
As a role model for Safety, we’re looking for someone who can build strong and effective relationships with Managers, in order to promote safety and ensure it’s embedded into decision-making and activities within the TrainCare centre. You’ll also need to be able to interpret SHEC legislation, approved codes of practice, guidance and Health and Safety procedures to be able to provide accurate advice and guidance.
We’re also looking for the following:
- NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety
- Membership of a professional safety institution such as IOSH.
- Extensive knowledge of occupational Health and Safety and environmental issues, legislation, standards and best practice
- Good IT Skills and a detailed knowledge and experience of using Microsoft Office Products, especially Excel and PowerPoint
This role is not safety critical.
