Lucas, Apprentice
What is a Health Physics Monitor?
A Health Physics Monitor also known as a Radiation Protection Technician, helps to protect people and the environment from the adverse effects of ionising radiation and contamination by providing radiation monitoring services.
You will provide safety-related advice to operators by taking radiation and contamination measurements using specialist equipment, interpreting the results, and applying them to real life scenarios. You will need to be comfortable working with numbers and completing mental calculations as you will not always have access to a calculator. This role is critical to ensuring safe operations in nuclear facilities and requires a high level of attention to detail, quality and accuracy in recording and interpreting measurements. You will need to have a positive attitude to health, safety and quality.
What is the Health Physics Apprenticeship Programme:
During the course of this 2-year Apprenticeship, you’ll learn from our industry-leading experts and gain valuable experience, whilst studying for Level 2 qualifications in Radiation Protection. You can expect on-the-job training and the kind of practical experience you simply can't get in a classroom.
You will be fulfilling a key role in protecting people and the environment by becoming experienced in hands on radiation protection, and how it’s used in a nuclear power plant. You will learn how to measure radiation which cannot be seen, smelled, or felt. You will become familiar with the systems making up the first nuclear power station to be built in a generation.
As you gain experience, you will need to wear personal protective equipment for a significant proportion of the working day, including respiratory protective equipment. In this role you will be required to work outside in all weather conditions, at heights, in small spaces and in nuclear facilities with ionising radiation.
What salary and benefits are we offering you?
- Salary of £18,310 plus excellent benefits
- 28 days’ annual leave
- Flexible benefits package
- Wellbeing, physical and mental health support services
- Outward Bound programme – team building excursion prior to starting in September
- A dedicated Early Careers Programme Lead for your scheme, as well as the support of a Line Manager and Buddy
Training, development and support for you:
The Health Physics Apprenticeship course is primarily taught through on the job training over a two-year period, with a 3-week classroom-based block during Year 1 for learning.
Across the two years, you will complete placements and gain hands-on experience across various nuclear sites in the UK. As you progress through the programme you will develop your own portfolio of experiences, demonstrating what you have learnt along the way. Within the last six months of your apprenticeship, you will undertake an assessment by an independently appointed organisation, where you will be expected to clearly demonstrate your capability to perform as a Health Physics Monitor.
Once you’ve completed the programme, you’ll have both qualifications and experience within EDF; that means you’ll be in the best possible position to continue your career. The future is yours for the taking!
Head to our Careers page www.edfenergy.com/careers for more information about the scheme and Apprentice life at EDF.
Where you’ll work:
During the apprenticeship you will be working with Radiological Protection teams at Hinkley Point C and across EDF Nuclear Operations. Your time will be split between your EDF workplace and Bridgwater and Taunton College. There may be a requirement to undertake secondments or work in other locations.
To join our team you'll need:
- You'll have a minimum of 3 GCSEs Grade 4 (Grade C) in Mathematics, English and a Science or engineering subject.
- Functional Skills Level 2 will also be considered as equivalent to GCSE Grade 4 (Grade C). Other equivalent qualifications may be considered.
- Candidates will be required to achieve appropriate security and medical clearances; these will be instigated on receiving a conditional offer of employment.
- Minimum age of 18 by 1st September 2024 due to legal obligations.
-
To be appointed to this role, you will need to meet the criteria for Security Vetting which will, ordinarily, require you to have been a resident of the UK for at least 3 of the last 5 years.
Our Assessment Centre will be held virtually on Wednesday the 24th of April.
Our selection process is designed to bring out the best in you! We use a strengths-based approach to let you shine and showcase your skills and what truly brings you joy. We believe that embracing our individual strengths lies at the heart of engagement and the motivation to succeed and excel in our at work. We’re here to guide you and you’ll find helpful tips and advice about the application process and assessment centre dates on our graduate web pages.
We will be closing this advert when we have our desired number of candidates.
