Health & Safety Advisor - High Speed Rail 2 Apprenticeship
We have an exciting opportunity for an Apprentice Health & Safety Advisor to support the SHE team working on HS2
About the Project
The HS2 Main Civils Contracts include both Lots S1 (Euston Tunnels & Approaches) and S2 (Northolt Tunnels). The role will be based in the West Delivery Unit supporting the delivery of earthworks and reinforced concrete packages including a cut and cover tunnel and multiple head house structures.
Security Vetting:
HS2 requires SCS to undertake security vetting on all staff to the UK Government Baseline Personal Security Standard.
All successful candidates will be subject to this vetting procedure as part of the on-boarding process.

About the Role
Support the Health & Safety Team in the management of H&S for SCS activities, including the implementation of the H&S Management System (HSMS) to ensure compliance with OHSAS 18001:2007 certification and with Works Information.
The position plays the key role in helping to establish and maintain the highest and where possible, new industry Health and Safety standards for the project.
Key Responsibilities
- Understand the SCS Health & Safety Policies and Processes and statutory requirements as they affect the SCS operations and ensure that the requirements are implemented
- Assist with providing operational and functional management advice on the practical implementation of the company’s H&S policies and processes including external stakeholders such as customers if necessary.
- Understand how Health and Safety Management plans are developed (if applicable) and be a part of the coordination of review
- Understand and support the H&S team on how to provide operational and functional management with advice on the prevention of accidents, incidents and ill health
- Assist the SHE Manager and other members of the HSS team, in key tasks to assist in the development, management, implementation and monitoring of the Health and Safety Management System
- Assist H&S Team and/ or Contract Management in establishing, managing and maintaining relationships with external stakeholders such as local authorities, HSE and others as required and directed
- Assist the H&S Manager and other members of the HSS team, in key tasks to assist in the development, management, implementation and monitoring of the Health and Safety Management System
- Assist with and undertake H&S surveillance where required of operational sites. Participate, as requested in parent company H&S audits
- When directed, be involved with the preparation of H&S risk assessments and safe systems of work.
- Assist with the monitoring, analysis of and reporting of H&S performance. Utilise data to highlight areas of further consideration, evaluation and intervention
- Assist with the investigation of accidents, incidents, dangerous occurrences, near misses and other incidents as directed to understand the process.
- Assist with promoting best practice, capture best practice and ensure it is fed-back into the business and parent companies
- Set standards and lead by example in the management of H&S
- Liaise with the other members of the H&S Team and the wider organisation with regards to H&S
- Build and maintain own level of knowledge and competency in relations to H&S Management and responsibilities including appropriate qualifications and professional membership
- Obtain competency cards in line with the SCS Competence Card Compliance Standard
- Understand the Client and Joint Venture Partners' Environment and Sustainability Policies, Processes and statutory requirements as they affect the company's operations and ensure that the requirements, as applicable within their discipline, are implemented on the project

The level and training provider for your apprenticeship will depend on the skills you present at interview. The Early Careers team will register you with a suitable training provider who can support the delivery of your qualification.
Being an apprentice means you will work both on-the-job with your project at site, and off-the-job with the provider. When taking on one of the many apprenticeships on offer by Costain, you will be supported by your project line manager and team, the Costain Early Careers Team, and the training provider of your academic qualification. The training provider may be a college, a university or even an independent training provider.
You will be supported throughout your apprenticeship by your local team and line manager, and you will be given time to carry out your studies with the provider etc. Your on-the-job training will be in line with the work available on site but will afford the opportunity to ensure that you are given on site experience required to meet the technical and competency levels to achieve your apprenticeship goals.
About You
- A passionate individual looking to undertake an apprenticeship with an award-winning employer
- Equivalent of 5 GCSEs, grades A*-C or 9-4, including Maths, Science and English
- An organised individual that can work well to deadlines with an adaptable and flexible attitude
- Someone that enjoys challenges and problem solving in their day-to-day work
- Communicating clearly, both written and verbally
- Works well within a team, but equally on your own
- Building and maintaining positive working relationships
- Use of Microsoft software packages

As some of our project sites are based in remote locations, it is worth noting that you will be required to have the ability to travel to site
