Job description

The Chemotherapy Unit at East Lancashire Teaching Hospital provides care for both oncology and haematology patients. We are looking for a highly motivated nurse who is keen to assist and support the chemotherapy nurses in providing safe personal effective care. You will need to be able to work autonomously, but also be part of our team. The unit is fast paced, challenging and rewarding all at the same time, on average treating 45 patients per day.
If successful you will be expected to support in the care of patients each day, ensuring that each patient receives the best care required. You will assist the registered nurse in delivering planned nursing care, work collaboratively and co-operatively with others to meet the needs of patients. To deal with patients, relatives and other members of the public in a polite and welcoming manner.

Maintain confidentiality at all times.
Perform basic Nursing care to the highest attainable standard, in accordance with agreed Nursing Practice.
Report significant changes to Senior Nursing staff.
Adhere to the policies and procedures in use within the Department.
Participate in basic housekeeping duties on the request of senior work colleagues.
Perform early warning score observations.
Order lunches for daily patients.
Involve patients and carers/relatives in the delivery of care.
Provide reassurance support to patients and carers/family.
Work collaboratively with others in the department to ensure that patients’ needs are met.
Recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations.
Provide escort and transfer for patients, with low dependency, as directed.
Prepare and set up clinics, including trays and trolleys, treatment and examination rooms.
Tidy and clean rooms and equipment as directed.
Chaperone patients when required.
During procedures, provide assistance to medical and nursing staff when requested.
Undertake agreed clinical tasks, under the direct supervision of a qualified nurse.
Perform MRSA swabbing.
Ensure stationary stocked.
Prepare patient information packs.

Working as a member of the Chemotherapy Team the post holder will support the nursing team to provide excellent care to patients with a diagnosis of cancer. They will be responsible for the co-ordination of the patients’ treatment pathway, acting as a link between primary, secondary and tertiary care. They will provide support for patients, relatives and carers during their chemotherapy journey

Ensure compliance with policies, procedures and clinical guidelines for self and others.
Report any concern regarding patient care.
Participate in patient and public involvement activities.
Support people’s equality, diversity and rights.
Participate in Individual Performance Review annually.
Develop own skills and knowledge.
Attend mandatory training as directed
Attend team meetings as directed.
Maintaining the Environment:
Assist in monitoring and maintaining cleaning standards in the department
Keep all reception areas safe, clean and tidy conveying an appearance of a well cared for, friendly and inviting department e.g. remove clutter, tidy notice boards
Carry out spot cleaning to ensure spillages are dealt with swiftly and efficiently
Keep all areas around patients chairs clean and tidy
Respect the privacy and dignity of patients
Maintain the safety of other people’s property
Ensure that all waste is removed, correctly sorted into the appropriate waste streams, and labelled
Ensure that all waste is stored in the correct manner according to Trust Policy
Ensure that all waiting areas are clean and tidy and sort magazines, papers etc.
Carry out daily and weekly checks of clinic environment. Report any problems to the Estates Department
Ensure general and specialist equipment are cleaned according to Trust policy e.g. IV stands, commodes
Monitor and co-ordinate ad hoc maintenance, liaising with the Estates Department Support Helpdesk as appropriate
Health & Safety
Comply with safety instructions/policies laid down.
Use, in a proper and safe manner, the equipment and facilities provided.
Refrain from the wilful misuse, or interference, with anything provided in the interests of health and safety and any action which might endanger yourself and others.
Report as soon as practicable, all hazards and defects to your senior.
Report as soon as practicable, all accidents and untoward occurrences and ensure that the appropriate form is completed
