Are you a food, water or clinical microbiology scientist seeking a new opportunity? We have an exciting opportunity to join out External Quality Assessment Services (EQA). Our team works with laboratories in the UK and worldwide to ensure safety using our meticulously design programs covering, food, water and environmental microbiology. Results reported by microbiology laboratories often play a significant role in health protection and managing public health incidents; tools such as EQA/PT is essential for laboratories to be able to demonstrate that their results are accurate, reliable and reproducible

As a Healthcare Scientist Team Manager, you will provide insightful leadership for the UK NEQAS, particularly in the Bacteriology and Mycology domain. You will ensure that specimens for EQA are meticulously prepared and quality-controlled according to schedule. You will handle the crucial procedures involved in report production and respond to customer queries and feedback. Additionally, you will play a pivotal role in the growth and training of laboratory staff, focusing on specific areas of expertise. You will be responsible for carrying out quality assurance audits and maintain up to date records in QPulse daily.

Job description

Responsibilities section:

The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:

  • Responsible for ensuring the organisation, preparation and quality control of simulated specimens for distribution under UK NEQAS including the management of resources.
  • Be responsible for maintaining a high standard of work in the Bacteriology/Mycology laboratory team, ensuring compliance with UKAS accreditation and delivering the best laboratory practices that are safe, economical and effective.
  • Oversee data processing operations involved in the analysis of UK NEQAS participants’ results and take responsibility for the preparation of reports.
  • Responsible for sourcing and obtaining clinical material for the EQA schemes.
  • Develop and prepare new specimen types as required.
  • Apply knowledge of clinical bacteriology, mycology and molecular techniques in the design, quality control and stability testing of the specimens.
  • Maintain professional competence and be aware of relevant developments in clinical microbiology.
  • Undertaking deputy roles where required.

Person specification

Essential Criteria:

Essential

  • MSc in Medical Microbiology/ Bacteriology or equivalent level qualification
  • Extensive experience in bacteriology, mycology and/ or microbiology (clinical)
  • Significant practical clinical laboratory diagnostic
  • Experience in data analysis, competence in word
  • Experience of Quality Management systems
  • Experience and understanding of laboratory safety and procedures
  • Experience of managing people

Desirable

  • HCPC Registration
  • FIBMS Registration
  • Knowledge and substantial experience of molecular techniques
  • Experience of freeze-drying

STAGE 1 - APPLICATION & SIFT:

You will be required to complete an application form. This will be assessed in line with the full list of essential criteria as detailed in the attached job description – please do provide evidence of how you meet this.

If you are successful at this stage, you will progress to an interview.

STAGE 2 – INTERVIEW

This competition will involve a face to face interview.

As part of the process, candidates will be invited to interview which will involve an in-depth discussion of your previous experience and professional competence in relation to the criteria set out in the Person Specification.

Candidates will also be asked to participate in a session where they will be required to prepare and deliver a 5-minute presentation to the panel. This will be followed by a question-and-answer segment. The presentation will be designed to assess each candidate’s experience in line with the requirements of the role. Full details will be provided prior to the interview.

Your Statement of Suitability should outline your skills, experience, and achievements, providing evidence of your suitability for the role, with reference to the essential criteria (outlined in the person specification section).

You will also be asked to provide information within the ‘Employer/ Activity history’ section of the application form. This is equivalent to the information you would provide on a CV, setting out your career history.
