Job description

At NPL, we’re seeking a PhD graduate with a passion for experimental physics to join our world-leading Time and Frequency Department.
In this hybrid role you will spend approx. 2 – 3 days per week on site in Teddington, and 2 – 3 days working remotely. We value your work-life balance and are willing to discuss flexible or part-time working arrangements to accommodate your needs. This position also comes with a generous salary and Benefits.
Reporting to the Principal Scientist, you’ll play a pivotal role in the development and operation of Atomic Fountain Clocks, which are at the heart of the UK’s national timescale, UTC(NPL).  Our caesium fountains are among the most accurate in the world and are used to steer the global timescale UTC. We also build primary Fountain Clocks for timing labs across the world and are developing a new compact cold atom clock for broader use. Our group is currently working on a major upgrade to the performance and resilience of the UK timescale.
In this role you will be responsible for the operation of Atomic Fountain Clocks and support the development of the enhanced UK timescale. You will enjoy contributing to and leading efforts to improve the performance and reliability of these systems, and to develop novel devices. This role offers realistic opportunities to collaborate with broader areas of Time and Frequency measurement activity at NPL.

We are now working in a hybrid way, with a mix of remote and office working. We strive to offer a great work life balance - if you are looking for full time, part time or flexible options, we will try to make this work where business possible. This will be dependent on the kind of role you do and part of the business you work in.

You will have a strong practical aptitude and will use your experience in experimental laboratory work to complete tasks requiring high attention to detail.

To be successful in this role, you will have the following skills, experience, and qualifications:

  • PhD in Physics, Electronic Engineering, or a related field (a PhD, or equivalent experience, is desirable for a Higher Scientist)
  • Previous experience with practical experience in the atomic, molecular, or optical area
  • Sound skills in instrumentation and electronics design
  • Skilled in software development for hardware control, data acquisition and data analysis.
  • Experience of working in a team to achieve a common goal, but are capable of working independently
  • Communicate clearly and collaborate with colleagues in your team
  • Enjoy problem solving and can demonstrate critical thinking, assessing the pros and cons of your approach
  • Understand the value of providing good customer service to both internal and external customers, wanting to meet and exceed customer expectations through delivering high quality work with proactive communications
  • Committed to personal development and taking on learning opportunities to get the most from the role

Highly desirable skills:

  • Previous experience with lasers and optics, precision measurement, use of test and measurement instrumentation
  • Proficient in relevant software (including Python and Labview) for hardware interfacing, data acquisition and data analysis.
  • Experience in electronics and RF/microwave hardware/instrumentation

If it sounds like this is the role for you, we look forward to hearing from you. In return for your expertise, inclusive approach, and commitment, we will provide an attractive salary + benefits package and the chance to join a passionate and welcoming team.
