Highways Technician Traffic Management & Road Safety

Job Introduction

Our Highways and Transport Service deliver essential services for the people of Milton Keynes including highways maintenance, managing local bus services, and developing millions of pounds of transport infrastructure every year, plus much more.

We have some really significant projects to work on in the coming years, such as:

• Replacing street lighting to lower energy LEDs.
• A large-scale electric vehicle programme.
• Using AI and other technology to become even more efficient.
• Major road and cycling network projects.

We’re often the first on the scene to deal with emergencies, so you’ll need to be prepared to be out and about in all weathers and possibly on call during the winter.

Main Responsibility

• Assist the Senior Engineer (Highways) with the investigation, design development, engagement and implementation of a programme of Traffic Management and Road Safety interventions, including the preparation of scheme layout drawings using AUTOCAD.
• Prepare packages of work for schemes in the programme. Interrogate, update and maintain the Council’s accident reporting system.

The Ideal Candidate

• Educated to degree level or equivalent with an engineering or technical background.
• Computer literate with a good knowledge of Word and Excel software packages and experience of asset data management, monitoring and running reports.
• Knowledge of types of Traffic Management and Road Safety schemes.
• Understanding of risk management and its application with the ability to identify and analyse risks.
• Strong and effective communication skills.
• For this role you are required to have a full UK driving licence and provide evidence of your vehicle insurance with business cover and use of a vehicle. If you are successful, you will be required to supply evidence of your licence prior to starting the role.
• Should you be offered the role, as part of the pre-employment checks a Basic DBS will be actioned for you.

Our roles are either designated ‘site based’ or ‘home based’. ‘Site based’ roles can include up to two days a week working from home whilst ‘home based’ roles are based at home four days a week.  Of course, managers designate which category roles are in based on the needs of the service and the circumstances.
