We are one of the world’s leading research centres for the study of prions and their wider relevance to neurodegenerative disease with a growing research activity in Alzheimer’s disease (www.prion.ucl.ac.uk). The Institute is highly multidisciplinary with close integration of structural and molecular biology, genetics, cellular and animal models, small molecule and immuno-therapeutics and clinical research and provides a National centre of expertise and training in its field.

About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Histology Technician to join our team. The core histology service provides an excellent experimental and post mortem diagnostic service for the MRC Prion Unit at UCL. The laboratory is equipped with a tissue processor, and automated immuno-staining machines enabling us to analyse experimental and human specimens.
The post holder will provide specialist technical support to the core Histology service ensuring all experimental animal and human diagnostic samples requiring histology, are prepared to a high standard, ready for analysis and interpretation by senior staff. Tissue samples will emanate from varied work associated with long-term projects to characterise the pathology of prion disease in humans and mice using immunohistochemistry.

  • This role meets the eligibility requirements for a skilled worker certificate of sponsorship or a global talent visa under UK Visas and Immigration legislation. Therefore, UCL welcomes applications from international applicants who require a visa.

About you

This appointment requires a Bioscience Honours degree, a high proficiency in histology laboratory techniques, and sound experience in a scientific or medical environment. Extensive experience in sectioning paraffin embedded blocks is essential, as is a meticulous and precise approach to work.
