At Synnovis, we are currently shaping the future of pathology services by creating a world-leading Hub and Spoke pathology network with our NHS partners. A vacancy has arisen for the Histopathology Associate Practitioner’s role at Royal Brompton Hospital. The candidate will play a vital role in providing an excellent quality patient care by assisting pathologists, BMSs and administrators to perform their daily tasks.
The role involves the provision of Histopathology service by working under the supervision of Biomedical Scientists, Administrators and Consultants in the Histopathology Department.
To provide and receive complex information to inform work colleagues or external contacts, other departments or visitors to the department.
To communicate any difficulties, problems, accidents or incidents affecting the delivery of the service or the department to a section leader or the service manager promptly.
To partake in all administration duties relating to clinical work for Consultant Pathologists and staff, including issuing reports by post, slide dispatch and keeping records, dealing with external reports and other records, taking minutes for all departmental and management meetings.
Duties require all round experience of NHS administrative systems, including the patient administration service (PAS), and in-depth knowledge of the Laboratory Information System (LIMS) as well as an excellent understanding of medical terms and phrases.
Familiarity with Word for Windows, Excel, PowerPoint, and audio typing is necessary for this job role. The ability to deal with telephone callers in a sensitive and calm manner is essential.
To ensure that all contact with patients, staff from other Hospital departments and visitors to the Department is courteous, helpful and professional.

A large part of this modernisation will involve moving 70% of our services to a purpose built, state of the art Hub laboratory in the heart of London.
For now, the job you are applying for will be based at one of our hospital sites however, from 1 April 2024 our people and services will start to move to our Hub laboratory in Blackfriars, Southwark, SE1, with some work remaining in refurbished essential services laboratories across our hospital network, focusing on the rapid turnover of urgent tests. To safely handle, use and dispose of patient blood, urine, faeces, other body tissue, and hazardous chemicals.
To be familiar with the Advisory Committee on Dangerous Pathogens (ACDP) requirements for the handling of dangerous pathogens, and to apply this knowledge in order to safely handle these dangerous pathogens in the safety cabinets.
To learn and understand the given tasks in designated areas of diagnostic work and admin work within the department to assist in the provision of a comprehensive and appropriate laboratory service to patients and staff.
To understand and follow the laboratory standard operational and health and safety policies and procedures and ensure that safe working practices are maintained according to standard operating procedures.
To adapt to new methodology or working practices when required, due to changing circumstances.
To ensure that specimens and request forms are adequately labelled before being accepted into the laboratory and to resolve problems arising from incorrectly or inadequately labelled specimens and requests.
To maintain patient confidentiality

To cover for the Biomedical Support staff in order to maintain the service.

To be familiar with the Trust and department health and safety policies and ensure that they are followed to maintain a safe working environment for all employees and visitors.
To be familiar with all core trust policies such as sickness reporting, annual leave requesting, health and safety, etc.
To help in facilitating the research activities of the department.
