Historic Characters for South Asian and Caribbean Stories
The Black Country Living Museum is searching for Historic Characters to join our team. These individuals breathe life into the stories of those who lived and worked in the Black Country through engaging with our visitors. We are currently developing stories relating to people of the following heritage:
South Asia: particularly India, Bangladesh, Pakistan,
The Caribbean: particularly Jamaica
Europe: particularly Irish, German, Polish and Italian
If you feel able to interact with our visitors in telling authentic migration stories from the Black Country during the 1940s, 50’s, and 60’s we would like to hear from you! We are interested in hearing from anyone who may have knowledge and be able to share, engage, and inform our visitors of migration experiences arriving from the above regions and working in the Black Country during these decades.
What are the duties?
• Engaging knowledgeably and respectfully with our visitors to reflect on lived experiences of the Black Country.
• Bringing our 26-acre site to life by telling stories and/or performing for our visitors (please note experience is not essential, your confidence to demonstrate these skills is more important).
What are we looking for?
• Engaging personalities able to interact enthusiastically with our visitors.
• A willingness to respond to training to ensure the authenticity of our stories.
• Respectful adherence to the Museum's standards and expectations around visitor engagement.
Who are we?
We are an award-winning open-air museum. Throughout our 46-year history, our aim has always been clear: Inspiring your discovery of the Black Country. We ensure that the revolutionary story of the Black Country’s industrial landscape – the first ever of its kind in the UK – is celebrated by generations. We have an array of iconic local heritage buildings including our new Industrial Quarter and 1950/60s historic town.
What can you expect?
• Unique Working environment: The Museum hosts seasonal, themed, and high-profile events, as well as being regularly used for TV and Film locations.
• Opportunity to learn new skills.
• Competitive rewards & benefits.
• Supportive & inclusive work culture.
• Positive attitude to work-life balance.
If you would like to learn more about being a Historic Character, please come along to our open days/evenings on 9th, 10th, and 11th April between 4.00 pm – 6.00 pm and 16th & 18th April between 9.00 am – 11.00 am. To sign up, please email us.
