Job description

How you'll make a difference

In this frontline role, you will assess applications from customers applying for housing. You will play an important role in identifying households with an urgent need to move and support them through the application process. You will also identify individuals or families, who may need specialist advice, or support services and provide help to ensure they can access the services they need.  

What will you be doing?
 
  • A considerable part of your role will be to respond to initial queries and to resolve problems for customers in relation to their housing circumstances,
  • You will ensure that applications for social housing are correctly completed and appropriately assessed.
  • You will arrange for health and housing assessments to be made and make routine decisions on the applicant’s banding on health and housing grounds.
  • You will identify if a customer has grounds to be referred to the HomeChoice panel.
  • You will regularly make enquiries to complete assessments and establish if the customer is homeless, threatened with homelessness or is experiencing any other special circumstances.
  • Where appropriate, you will refer applications to other sections within HomeChoice and signpost customers to other advice or support services.

What we need from you

  • You will have an NVQ 2 or 3 GCSE’s grades C or above, one of which must be English, or equivalent qualification.
  • You will have some relevant experience in a similar role, preferably housing or other statutory service, and within a multi-agency environment, and knowledge of relevant housing processes.
  • You must have proven IT skills in using email, databases, spreadsheets and standard applications such as Microsoft suite of products.
  • You will have some knowledge of housing options and advice, an understanding of housing remedies including housing allocations, and an understanding of the needs of vulnerable people and minority groups.
  • You will have experience of providing clear information and to empathise with customers.
  • You will be able to demonstrate empathy and deal with enquiries sensitively and record information accurately.
  • You will have an ability to carry out financial assessments related to housing options and some knowledge of welfare benefits and have some basic knowledge and understanding of housing legislation as it relates to this post.
