Job summary

OPSS works to protect consumers from unsafe products and support businesses through effective regulation. This post sits within our Regulatory Information and Intelligence Unit.
The Regulatory Information and Intelligence Team is responsible for collecting, collating and analysing information to produce and disseminate products which help shape and support OPSS’ regulatory decision-making at all levels.
We are creating 2 brand new Information and Intelligence Researcher roles within the team, ideally suited to individuals who have an interest in regulatory Information and Intelligence and who have a desire to work for a national regulator. No previous experience in intelligence or regulation is required for this role as a comprehensive, formal training programme will be provided.

The role will support and embed our management of information, reporting and Intelligence capability supporting operational, tactical, strategic and regulatory information and Intelligence.


This is an exciting opportunity for a focused individual to be an integral part of a team with the key purpose of consumer safety!
As one of 2 Researchers within the team, you will play a meaningful role in the receipt and triage of Information and Intelligence into the unit through the centralised mailbox. You will contribute to the production of reports and products in response to consumer safety incidents and in proactive data, Information and Intelligence scoping.

Job description

As a regulatory Information and Intelligence Researcher you will work across the team to:

  • Help inform regulatory risk based decisions by collaborating with the Regulatory Information and Intelligence team, and wider OPSS teams, to develop assessments to support the production of Information and Intelligence reports
  • Develop research skills to gather, summarise and interpret information from various open and closed sources
  • Support the production of intelligence assessments and summaries, utilising a range of sources of information, intelligence database and open-source research to make relevant assumptions and recommendations
  • Support the development of a reporting function in the Product Safety Database and produce reports on product safety and compliance issues
  • support to the operational planning, and reporting of Regulatory Information and Intelligence activities
  • Accurate recording and cleansing of data and information to inform the development of intelligence products
  • Support RII’s responsibilities within the operational delivery for UK Contact Point workstreams, ensuring notifications are reviewed, processed, and actioned efficiently and effectively
  • Develop operational instructions to support and provide guidance to OPSS teams
  • Support Major Incidents across OPSS in a reactive manner
  • Manage the Regulatory Information and Intelligence Mailbox, ensuring receipt, triage and dissemination of correspondence is undertaken efficiently and effectively
  • Act as Secretariat for working groups as and when required
  • Work independently to show creative and ambitious tendencies

Person specification

Essential Criteria

  • Good working knowledge of Word/Excel/PowerPoint to produce accurate and informative reports
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and adapt well to consistently changing environments
  • Good time management skills with the ability to prioritise workload to meet tight deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to develop rapport, influence and network effectively
  • Excellent attention to detail and thorough in reviewing work
  • Confidence to actively seek out and provide solutions to issues
  • Ability to collaborate with the wider team to ensure priorities are achieved
  • A willingness to undertake any training vital to your role.
  • Remain hardworking and positive to the wider team, carefully challenging in an appropriate manner.

Desirable Criteria

  • An understanding/knowledge of the National Intelligence Model
  • Previous experience of working in a research or business support role
  • Previous experience of writing reports or developing intelligence products
  • Previous experience of working in a regulatory environment
  • Previous experience of maintaining databases
  • Ability to review/combine multiple datasets to provide and present clear outcomes
  • Ability to present, communicate and disseminate data appropriately and with influence.
