Job Title: Infrastructure and Operational Technician

Salary: The starting salary is £43,227, which includes allowances totalling £2,841.

The salary is broken down as £40,386 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £45,615 Plus, a location allowance of £1,841 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

Location: Lambeth


This position is within the Technical Surveillance Unit (TSU) of the MPS. The TSU provides technical expertise in covert surveillance to support operations that investigate and disrupt serious and organised crime.

TSU engineering staff provide, maintain and deploy various technology to assist police operational work:

  • Video and audio technology, recording equipment and IP CCTV monitoring systems.
  • Asset location systems including use of GPS
  • Specialist RF systems
  • Network and server infrastructure
  • Desktop/mobile software and hardware

The successful candidate will have studied to C&G, ONC, HNC, HND, Degree, or equivalent level in a relevant subject and/or have experience of working in a relevant engineering role.

As such they will have good knowledge of three or more of the following subjects:

  • CCTV/Video transmission
  • Audio principles
  • IP networking
  • RF principles
  • GPS systems
  • IT software and hardware
  • Telecoms
  • Electronics

The successful candidate will be expected to show initiative and take responsibility for their work, when managing projects and liaising with colleagues, partners and suppliers. Successful candidates will carry out research and development of new technologies to maintain and advance the TSU’s capability. This includes choosing, evaluating and purchasing equipment and systems, carrying out modifications and commissioning and finally maintenance and on-going support long term.

TSU work is driven by operational requirements in a fast moving and challenging environment. As such a candidate with a flexible approach to work and an ability to work extended hours at short notice is desired. Opportunities for paid overtime and flexibility allowance for on-call rotas are available.

A full UK driving license is required.

Internal role specific training and external engineering training and study opportunities are also available.

Vetting

This post requires access to the most sensitive intelligence material on a daily basis. Applicants must hold or be prepared to undergo National Security Vetting (NSV) Security Check (enhanced) (SC(e)) level before taking up the post; with a willingness to undergo Developed Vetting (DV) once in post, if required.

Additionally, this material is of particular sensitivity to the UK and its distribution must be restricted to UK nationals. In approved circumstances dual nationals (of which one element is British) may also be granted access. However, in the event that potential conflicts of interest cannot be managed the post holder will not be able to see the intelligence material and will not be able to perform their duties. For the purpose of safeguarding national security and in line with Cabinet Office Policy, supported by Section 82(2) to (4) of the Police Reform Act (2002), applicants who do not hold or acquire Security Check (enhanced) (SC(e)) OR Developed Vetting (DV) clearance and meet the nationality requirements cannot be offered the post.
