Job description

Manchester City Council aims to be in the top-flight of world-class cities, with a dynamic economy and highly skilled people; to be well-connected, limiting climate change; and helping all of us feel safe and live well in our attractive and welcoming city.

To keep on track, we have reset our priorities up to 2025, refocusing on the challenges – putting equity, inclusion, and sustainability centre stage – with renewed focus on young people, our economy, health, housing, our environment and infrastructure.

We serve a range of thriving and diverse communities, and we know there are significant inequalities in our populations. Within our workforce we are committed to creating an inclusive culture with equity of opportunity; we know from conversations with both our colleagues and communities that we have more work to do. Our ambition is to ensure equity and inclusion, including Anti-Racism, is central to all our work.

This new and unique role will involve you working across all levels of Manchester City Council, Manchester Integrated Care Partnership and strategically with partner organisations and our communities. Working with Sharmila Kar, Joint Director of Equality, Inclusion and Engagement, you will shape and strategically influence policies, incorporating the lived experiences of our communities, staff, and partnerships, to narrow the inequalities gap and improve outcomes for residents and communities.

Request

We are seeking to recruit an experienced senior leader with the ability to manage relationships with confidence and able to influence a broad and diverse range of audiences. Our integrated approach presents an opportunity to tackle long-standing concerns and deep-rooted inequalities; an understanding of racial equity and social justice principles with the demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge in health and care settings will be critical.

Professionally curious and motivated by embedding an inclusive culture in complex organisations, and comfortable in working across organisational boundaries, you will bring a track record of directly impacting and delivering successful equalities, inclusion and engagement interventions and transformation.  You will have an innate ability to draw together our equalities work across the Manchester system, creating a genuine golden thread. You will bring passion, external insights and evidence based good practice to underpin the transformation of our equalities agenda.

This is not your typical diversity role. We are therefore excited to find a candidate whose work history includes collaborations with diverse stakeholders on significant issues related equity, inclusion, and social justice for the purpose of garnering support, shaping opinion, and achieving important objectives.
