Job description

Join our team at the Guardian and be a part of a diverse and inclusive global organisation that delivers fearless, investigative journalism, and holds power to account. Our team of award-winning journalists, cutting-edge commercial professionals, and industry-leading digital experts are committed to making a difference and represent a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives. We offer a challenging and exciting environment for career development, with a focus on training, growth and fostering an inclusive culture.

We are now looking for an Interactive Journalist on a 12 month fixed term contract. You’ll create innovative and engaging visual journalism as part of the Guardian’s Visuals team.

Our award-winning team creates and produces visual journalism around key issues of public interest, from the climate crisis to the cost of living; from air pollution to elections results; from visual investigations to interactives on the affordability of housing

About the Role

  • Capture the attention and imagination of the Guardian’s global audience using  design and multiple visual formats including data visualisation, mapping, video, animation and ‘find yourself in the data’ stories
  • Find and tell data and visual news stories, using a combination of reporting, data and developer skills. You’ll be under the direction of the Visuals editor, working on projects led by project editors
  • Write performant, clean code that makes use of latest technologies and coding good practice

About You

  • Expertise in HTML, CSS and Javascript
  • Experience in problem-solving across the scope of a project. This might be data manipulation and storage, browser and platform optimisation, or dev tools and processes
  • A willingness to learn new skills in data and visual journalism, and to work collaboratively with colleagues in cross-sectional teams
  • Familiarity with Javascript frameworks and willingness to learn new ones such as Svelte
  • Passionate about journalism and interested in innovative storytelling
  • Ability to visualise data using charts and maps, using libraries such as d3 or similar, and visual literacy to understand which format to use and when
  • Ideally you'll have a demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to this role

We actively encourage applications from candidates who are Black, Asian, minority ethnic or from other groups traditionally underrepresented in the UK media.

Please note, we operate a hybrid working environment, with the successful candidate currently expected to work in our head office 3 days per week.

How to Apply

To apply, please upload your latest CV and a cover letter which outlines why you’d love to take on this role, and why you’re a great match for what we’re looking for.

The closing date for applications is Tuesday 30th January 2024.

All roles at the Guardian are open for everybody to apply. It is important to us that you feel supported and comfortable throughout your application process, in order to perform your best.

Please let us know if there are any changes we could make to the application process to make it easier and more comfortable for you. Please contact Sean Brinkley, sean.brinkley@guardian.co.uk to discuss further so we can work with you to support you through your application.
