Job Description

About the role

National Grid Interconnectors is at the forefront of delivering low carbon electricity between Great Britain and Europe. We provide the infrastructure and the market arrangements to move power to where it is most needed, providing security of supply for the countries that we connect.

As a Commercial Strategy Manager, you will be responsible for recognising and responding to the commercial risks associated with operating a portfolio of interconnectors. There is a requirement to understand the commodity markets that drive revenues and to have the ability to propose strategies that will maximise the benefits from our existing routes to market, as well as identifying new opportunities to deliver the requirements of the business.

In this role, you will have direct line management responsibility for a team of 2-3 analysts, but will also work closely with the Commercial Risk and Modelling teams as well as the other functions within the Commercial, Customer and Regulation (CCR) team. In addition, you will act as a key point of contact with our joint venture partners across the portfolio, ensuring that our commercial activities have buy-in from all relevant stakeholders. You will need to demonstrate a clear understanding of energy market drivers and the potential risks and opportunities this can present to NGV’s diverse fleet of assets.

This role is based from Warwick, and you can enjoy our hybrid working from office and home. You'll be flexible to travelling to our Interconnector sites (UK and Europe) as required.

Key accountabilities
  • Development and deployment of commercial strategies to manage market risk exposure and deliver financial returns to National Grid.
  • Provide a clear narrative about what factors are influencing markets and how this will impact our businesses.
  • Engage with senior stakeholders both within National Grid and externally, to gain buy-in for commercial proposals.
  • Deliver analysis and insights which would allow decisions to be taken in terms of how products will be partitioned and sold.
  • Work with the forecasting teams to verify the inputs to commercial modelling and to provide validation of outputs.
About you
  • Experience of working in wholesale energy markets.
  • Good understanding of electricity markets in GB and across the EU.
  • An in-depth understanding of how market dynamics impact on energy prices.
  • Ability to influence key stakeholders (e.g. partners, investors, government regulators).
  • Excellent numerical capability and the ability to translate and distil complex issues into simple statements.
  • Comfortable with interpreting large datasets and working with VBA would be beneficial.
  • Ability to lead and coach a team to allow them to meet their full potential.

Don’t meet every single requirement? Studies have shown that women and people of colour are less likely to apply for jobs unless they meet every single qualification. At National Grid Interconnectors, we are committed to building a diverse, inclusive and authentic workplace for everyone. So, if you’re excited about this role but your experience or qualifications don’t match the job description exactly, we encourage you to apply anyway. You might just be the right person for our growing business in this role or another one.

What you'll get

A competitive salary between £60,000 – £75,000 – dependent on capability.

As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus of up to 15% of your salary for stretch performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%. You will also have access to a number of flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.
