Job description 1
The Environment Agency are fully committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We don’t just talk about diversity; we seek it, embrace it and live it, for the benefit of our staff, our communities and our environment. Everyone starting in a new role will be welcomed into the team and given all the training and support needed. As part of your comprehensive induction, you will be provided with all the equipment required for your role.
Do you want to be at the heart of the biggest investigations the Environment Agency has ever led? We’re establishing a team of Environmental Crime Investigators to support a major investigation looking into potential breaches of permit conditions at sewage treatment works.
You’ll bring your enthusiasm to the role, alongside experience in regulation / enforcement or investigation activities.
Your work will be steered by a local lead Case Officer who will work closely with the national Senior Investigating Officer. You will primarily be responsible for ensuring information and materials gathered within the investigation are correctly brought into evidence. You will:
Assist with site inspection/searches - including obtaining Magistrates Warrants if required.
Analyse and evidence materials from site inspection/searches.
Analyse data systems for reports of offending from sites, visit/revisit complainants, evidence any material they hold and start to build environmental effect / victim impact side of case.
Analyse data systems and local regulatory work to determine if offences have been dealt with previously and what if any action/sanctions already taken.
Evidence water company documents, eg, Companies House records, statement of accounts.
Assist with S108/PACE interview planning, implementation, evidencing and review.
Assist with case file production.
The team 1
The Environment Agency works to create better places for people and wildlife and support sustainable development.
As part of the National Enforcement Service, you’ll be working in the Enforcement and Investigations Team, a dispersed unit bringing together significant technical know-how across all disciplines of investigative practice.
You’ll work collaboratively with colleagues from a variety of place based local teams, including your lead Case Officer, under the direction of the Senior Investigating Officer.
Experience/skills required 1
We are looking for experienced and professional environmental regulators and/or investigative officers.
You’ll have:
Experience in an investigatory or regulatory role, with knowledge of evidence collection and production of case files;
Working knowledge of investigative legislation, including the Police and Criminal Evidence Act and Criminal Procedures and Investigation Act;
Great skills in interpreting data and excellent verbal and written skills;
Proven ability to complete tasks accurately and with minimum supervision, either working individually or as part of a team.
You’ll also need to be competent in the use of IT, eg, Microsoft Office.
Knowledge of corporate investigations is beneficial but not essential.
The role will require travel from time to time and so a driving licence is required.
Contact and additional information 1
3 posts are available. Location is flexible around the Midlands, North West and Yorkshire, based at local Environment Agency offices.
Some travel will be necessary and vehicle transport (e.g., hire car) will be provided.
We are fully committed to having a diverse and inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies, including job share, so please include clearly any information regarding your preferred working arrangements on your application.
We also have a Guaranteed Interview Policy to support those with a disability who are seeking employment. We have committed to guaranteeing an interview to anyone with a disability whose application meets the minimum criteria for the post.
