Applications are invited from Police Staff and individuals who have experience in Professionalising Investigations Programme (PIP) 2 Investigations and a passion for developing others, to undertake the role of Investigative Coach & Trainer. This exciting opportunity will be based across the Local Policing Area's under the management of Learning and Development.
The main purpose of the role is to promote Approved Professional Practice across all commands and act as an experienced resource in investigative techniques, identifying and initiating developmental opportunities, which include PIP 1-2 for officers and staff, coaching and assisting as required.
You will work in partnership with PIP2 tutors, Assessors, Investigative Coaches and the candidates line manager to support on-going development on the DCP toward PIP 2 or specialist accreditation and embed force investigative standards, requirements and innovations, identifying and sharing best practice and lessons learned to support the development of the wider workforce and improve the quality of investigations/ evidence. Also support the Independent Quality Assurer (IQA) to identify best practice for assessment to enhance the efficiency, transparency and validity of the assessment process. This will also include supporting individuals within Public Protection toward SCAIDP and SSAIDP accreditations.
This is a challenging role that will require the successful applicants to provide reliable and essential support, guidance and encouragement to candidates, promoting an open, trusting and supportive learning environment which facilitates active participation and engagement from candidates and assists them to reach their full potential.
The role involves assessment of PIP2 suspect interviews and Video Recorded Evidence (VRE) of intimidated and vulnerable witnesses, as well as assessment of officers Occupational Competency Portfolios (OCP). OneFile is used for candidates to record their evidence for the assessor/Investigative Coach to assess against the set criteria.
The successful candidate will be expected to keep abreast of changes in legislation and force policy.
What we are looking for:
You will be able to demonstrate a strong knowledge of law and legislation and a keen interest in supporting and developing Detectives, with a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of professional behaviour, in keeping with the Force Plan and the Code of Ethics.
You must have a proven investigative background and be someone who constantly demonstrates best practice with a good understanding of the organisation, its culture and environment. You should also have the personal resourcefulness to find relevant information and materials which can be used to enhance learning and development.
The post holder will be required to show commitment to flexibility in working hours and location in order to provide cover for colleagues in other areas. They will need to be available to work with and support candidates at the times when they are on duty and support the Operational Investigative Support Team (OIST), Training teams as necessary.
You must be self- disciplined and able to work with minimal supervision, organised and confident with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, this will be combined with the ability to deliver feedback, both verbally and in writing, to enable the Trainee Investigator/accredited detective to develop to their full potential.
At shortlisting we will be looking for essential evidence of:
  • Knowledge of the Policing environment and policy.
  • Previous experience and Operational Competence at PIP Level 2
  • Your experience in liaising with colleagues and partners to identify and resolve problems and concerns and to achieve best practice.
  • Ability to deliver, support and inspire others through acting as a role model and enforcing standards
  • You must gain Superintendent or above endorsement for your application to this role before applying.
In addition, it would be helpful if you could evidence:
  • A formal Training qualification in adult education.
Our Location:
The Detective Development Team are based at various locations across Essex; either at the Essex Police College within the Headquarters site in SPRINGFIELD, CHELMSFORD or within geographical areas. The Investigative Coach role will be based at the Police College, however candidates will be expected to travel across the Local Policing Areas and should anticipate working from any of the primary Police Station locations within these, alongside the existing coaches. Essex Police College is easily accessible by road and Public Transport and there is some parking available on site on a 'first come first served' basis.

Essex Police offer agile working which designates that certain roles can offer flexibility in terms of place of work, including some home working. The specific requirements of this role will be discussed during the interview stages with candidates. The extent of flexibility will be agreed through individual assessment with the line manager to assess operational requirements and individual's suitability for home working. In the event that home working is agreed for the successful candidate, there will be a requirement to regularly attend the contractual workplace, as agreed with the line manager.
Essex Police offer incremental increases within this salary band, therefore the salary for this position will rise to a maximum of £35,982.00.
