The Junior Design Engineer will report into the Head of Support Engineering.

They are to provide basic subject matter experience in engineering related disciplines for projects in the DCS global estate. Their background experience will be typically from an Undergraduate Degree in Engineering / Physics / Aerospace or equivalent “on the job” work path. Typically candidates will have also done recent work in a Graduate or Advanced Apprenticeship Programme.

At COLT DCS, the Junior Design Engineer will work closely with more senior colleagues to learn and develop, working as part of a close-knit team who are really passionate about their role in this exciting industry.
They will also seek to build up skills in related disciplines, while working in an structured task driven environment with Design and Senior Engineers in the Support Engineering department. The work will support the DCS Operations estate, working on the design and replacement of data centre technical infrastructure.

OUTCOMES
  • Assist Senior and Design Engineers with engineering design functions related to technical infrastructure used to support all data centre installations in the COLT DCS estate
  • Produce basic Client Design Briefs and assisting Project Managers in technical functions during the project delivery cycle
  • Learn about the design and engineering of systems related to technical infrastructure used to support all data centre installations in the COLT DCS estate
  • Provide supplementary support for engineering related issues and where called upon also take on occasional stretch goals such as more advanced design activities or site auditing
  • Assist with maintenance of M & E standards, in conjunction with other departments in COLT DCS and help projects follow codes relevant to local compliance
  • Play an active role in supporting BIM 360 and similar document control systems
  • Developing depth in own specialism, while appreciating and learning complementary areas and seek to establish a career path for the future, with possible promotion into roles such as Design Engineer.
THE TEAM
The Junior Design Engineer will work closely with colleagues in all aspects of lifecycle Design Engineering. While they will have strengths in their own expertise area, opportunities will be given to encourage learning of new skills in complementary areas that will provide a good foundation for later career steps.
The Junior Design Engineer will under the direct instruction of Senior Engineers and other members of the Support Engineering team. They will support technical liaison with all teams across the business. This will include occasional support of other business functions such as Customer Solutions, Commercial Asset Management and Sales.

THE SKILLS / EXPERTISE THEY BRING
The Junior Design Engineer should have demonstratable basic experience learnt in the initial stages of their working career.
Some knowledge of complementary specialisms would be beneficial though in most cases are enhanced by in-role-learning. The candidate should show a thirst for knowledge and some basic skills in team work to allow them to make the most of the knowledge of more senior colleagues.
Some experience gained in more than one country – typically by short duration project visits - or equivalent life skills (not necessarily engineering) from earlier roles or personal travel would be helpful, as well of course holding recognised engineering qualifications through experiential or academic learning.
Language skills in English with intermediate to advanced spoken and written level are required. Other additional languages (German/French/Dutch), or willingness to do some basic learning, would be an advantage, as there may be some limited European and International travel required in the role.
