WHAT’S IT LIKE TO WORK AT JONATHAN CLARK PHYSIOTHERAPY?

We asked one of our Physiotherapists, Jordan Anderson, a series of questions, which provides an insight into his experience working for us.

1) Tell us a bit about your background as a therapist?

I was proud to graduate from The University of Southampton in June 2022 with 1st class honours in Physiotherapy. My final 2 placements were MSK outpatients in Portsmouth and FCP in Kingston.

Prior to this I had 7 years’ experience in the health and fitness industry, working as a personal trainer, group exercise instructor and recovery trainer with Nuffield Health and self-employed. This foundation in exercise prescription, strength and conditioning and health promotion has been invaluable early in my career.

I’ve now been at JCP for 7 months as a MSK Physiotherapist and have been steadily building experience in a wide range of conditions.

2) What attracted you to want to join this clinic?

I was interested in learning more about private MSK clinics after time away from this world during my degree. It was with Nuffield Health years before that I began to develop an interest in MSK physiotherapy, but I had focused on NHS placements and rotations for the last 3 years.

After meeting with Jonathan, his passion reminded me of my original motivations to commit to studying Physiotherapy and I was impressed by the friendly, professional, and supportive atmosphere within JCP. I did not expect a private practice to be so supportive of new graduates and knew I would fit in well here.

3) How have you found working here in reality?

I believe most busy MSK clinics can be a testing environment and if you’re motivated, willing to work hard and go the extra mile for patients you will learn so much and help a lot of people.

Working in JCP is very rewarding, with an encouraging and supportive team around me. The work is challenging in terms of clinical reasoning, time management and responsibility, but I thrive from the demands of the job and know there’s support when needed. Senior staff listen and take on feedback and a healthy work life balance is promoted.

4) Describe what a typical day might be like for you?

My days are generally very varied in terms of cases and experiences. Most days I treat a wide array of body areas, mostly common MSK conditions and some more complex or unusual. Today I also had a 121 with our clinical lead, discussed some complex cases and practiced some knee assessment skills. It’s been a busy day but very enjoyable!

5) Tell us about the core values of the business and how they fit with your own beliefs?

Integrity: I always keep the patient’s best interests in mind and act with strong clinical reasoning and professionalism. Maintaining responsibilities to my patients and the business is important to me. Going the extra mile when needed is always appreciated and the right thing to do.

Compassion: I believe listening and understanding people’s pain and problems is a very powerful and important part of our job as physiotherapists. I strive to make the clinic a safe and supportive space for people to tell their story and build an empathetic therapeutic alliance. This carries through to every assessment, treatment and contact with patients and other team members.

Health and Wellbeing: I stand by the saying that health is the greatest wealth. I am a strong believer in making every contact count to educate patients on health promotion and self-management tools to ensure a long-term resolution of their MSK complaint. I believe shared decision making is crucial to work as a team and empower the patient to show they are in control of their recovery and overall wellbeing.

6) What development opportunities do you get from the business?

I have developed so much in the last 7 months. Monthly in service training is always interesting and to a high standard. I’m provided with access to many online CPD platforms which are very educational and always improve my practice. Monthly 121’s with our clinical lead are so helpful and I always have the support when needed from them and other seniors as well as the rest of the team.

I haven’t yet used my CPD allowance but look forward to booking a course later this year, funded by JCP. I’m also taking on more responsibilities over the next few months which will continue to challenge me and help my growth.

7) From your own experience what type of person will be best suited to working here?

A friendly, caring, self-less person, that isn’t shy of a hard day’s work would be right at home!

8) Why would you recommend working for us?

I would recommend working for JCP because it’s a warm supportive environment with excellent opportunities to develop clinical skills. I feel valued and am proud to be part of a great team helping so many people.
