Job description

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Art Teacher to join our passionate team of educators from April 2024. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering high-quality art education to children in Primary 3-6; fostering their creativity and helping them develop a lifelong appreciation for Art.

This permanent role would suit either a specialist Art Teacher with an interest in developing art skills in younger children or a primary teacher with specialist interest of and experience in the teaching of art. The successful candidate will work four days per week exclusively in the Junior School to offer a skills-based curriculum to our pupils.

Main Responsibilities1.       Curriculum Development


Design and implement a comprehensive and engaging art curriculum that aligns with the experiences and outcomes in a Curriculum for Excellence and the school’s mission and values
Create lesson plans that cater to different learning styles and abilities, ensuring inclusivity
Liaise with Senior School colleagues to ensure appropriate skills progression into Geits (P7)
Collaborate with class teachers to create interdisciplinary learning opportunities


2.       Learning and Teaching


Deliver inspiring and interactive art lessons to primary school students, encouraging them to explore various artistic techniques and media
Foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment, promoting creativity, self-expression, and collaboration


3.       Assessment and Feedback


Evaluate children’s work regularly, providing constructive feedback to support their artistic development
Maintain accurate records of student progress, communicating and reporting effectively to parents and colleagues regarding pupil achievements and challenges
Attend parent evenings and communicate with parents whenever necessary
Provide written reports as part of our full annual summative reporting cycle


4.       Professional Learning


Stay informed of current trends and advancements in art education, attending relevant workshops/conferences to continuously enhance teaching practices
Take a full part in our Professional Learning sessions in school through Inservice Days and on Tuesday afternoons until 5pm


5.       Co-curricular and Wider Life of the School


Contribute to the co-curricular programme by, for example, organising and leading art-related after school activities to further enhance children’s artistic experiences
Be responsible for displaying children’s art work throughout the Junior School and ensuring these displays are changed regularly and are vibrant, engaging and demonstrate high-quality learning and experiences

The Ideal CandidateThe Candidate will:


Have a teaching qualification (PGDE or equivalent) and be eligible for full registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (E)
Have proven experience teaching art to primary school students (D)
Have strong knowledge of various art forms, techniques and art history (E)
Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills (E)
Be independent, self-motivated and organised with the ability to work as part of a team (E)
Have passion for fostering creativity and a positive attitude towards learning (E)
Have an understanding of additional support needs and neurodiversity in the classroom (D)
Be flexible and imaginative in developing new ideas and resources (E)
Be committed to The Edinburgh Academy Mission and Values (E) 

About the school/organisationThe Edinburgh Academy is a fully co-educational school. The School consists of a Senior School, Junior School and a Nursery Department. The School is a member of HMC. The Edinburgh Academy moved to full co-education across the whole school in 2008. The Junior and Senior Schools are on separate sites, both of which have spacious grounds and sports facilities including extensive playing fields, an all-weather sports area, and a large Sports Hall and Centre.
