An exciting and challenging opportunity has arisen for an experienced and motivated individual to join the senior nursing team on Victoria ward, here at Northampton General Hospital.
We are an 18 bedded unit. Our expertise and focus are on the provision of care, treatment and safe discharge of elderly patients with multiple medical and physical needs.
You must be an effective role model, have the ability to be flexible and organised in the work place and be able to demonstrate clear management and leadership skills. The successful candidate will be passionate about their patient care, provide clinical leadership to a team of staff and ensure that continuity of care is maintained for all patients.

The post holder will assist in the overall management of the service ensuring delivery of high standards of care to patients and their families/carers within the ward.
They will act as a clinical role model, setting and upholding agreed clinical standards and enabling patients to receive high quality, evidenced based care.
The post holder’s main responsibility will be to support the ward manager and contribute to teaching, assessing and supporting staff and students.
They will provide leadership and support to both nursing and multidisciplinary team ensuring the promotion of a safe working environment. The post holder will be an advocate for compliance with Trust values, policies and providing the Best Possible Care
Excellent communication /interpersonal skill are necessary for this post. This post will allow the successful candidate to develop both their clinical and managerial skills.
A fully flexible work pattern is required in order to meet the service needs.
Contributes to and oversees the safe and effective discharge planning of
patients informing the discharge team of issues and patient /relative
requirements/requests

Job responsibilities
To act in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct for Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors and to be accountable for own clinical practice and professional actions at all times.
To regularly take charge of the ward in the absence of Sister/Charge Nurse
To maintain own skills and knowledge and demonstrate clinical excellence and high standards of practice to other staff.
Ensure that agreed nursing procedures are known and followed.
Maintain a Professional Portfolio and responsibility for own professional development.
Actively participate in clinical audits.
Provide clinical nursing expertise and supervision of all grades of staff within the ward, to ensure a high standard of care.
Supervise the assessing, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care, thus providing high standards of patient care at all times.
Ensure that the care given reflects the hospital and departmental philosophies, standards and protocols.
Act as an effective role model and resource/advisor to colleagues, in the delivery of nursing care.
Ensure that nursing practice reflects current clinical developments and is based on sound evidence.
Promote a healthy, positive and safe environment for patients and staff.
Advise patients, relatives and friends as appropriate on the promotion of health and prevention of illness.
Meet clinical objectives as agreed separately with the Ward Sister/Directorate Head Nurse.
People/Management Excellence
Assist the Ward Sister in planning the staff duty rotas to meet the requirements of the ward and patients need, working on both day and night shifts as appropriate.
Assist the Ward Sister in monitoring and appraising the performance of staff within their sphere of responsibility.
Be aware of the budgetary requirements within their clinical areas of nursing.
Participate in regular staff and directorate meetings.
Demonstrate leadership skills; achieve good morale, with open communication between all disciplines of staff.
Assist the Ward Sister to create and maintain positive working relationships within the multi-disciplinary team.
Act as a change agent to promote innovation and high standard of practice.
Help to develop methods at ward level to monitor standards of care in liaison with the Ward Sister.
General Responsibilities: -
To have knowledge of the Health and Safety at Work act, COSHH, Clinical Risk and the policies of the Trust.
Assist in ensuring that all aspects of the policies are known and followed.
To be fully conversant with emergency procedures.
Facilitate and monitor compliance of nursing staff within own team with statutory and Trust mandatory training.
At all times ensure that own actions support and promote equality, diversity and the rights of patients, public and colleagues.
Educational:
Help to facilitate a learning environment that is conducive to the acquisition of further skills and knowledge for all grades of staff.
Identify training needs for team members and help in the completion of training needs analysis for the unit to ensure all staff have the opportunity for personal and professional development.
Act as role model to colleagues in the demonstration of high standards of practice by working with staff in the clinical setting.
Be actively involved in the teaching of all staff at ward and Directorate level and contribute to the development and implementation of the units training and development strategy
Will participate in the assessment of learner nurse and healthcare support nurses.
Other Information:
The postholder may be required to carry out other relevant duties as required.
The postholder will adhere to the duties specified under the Staff Responsibilities of the NHS Constitution in their day to day work and behaviours.

The postholder will be expected to undertake training, including mandatory and role specific training, relevant to their role and ensure it is renewed as required.
