Job description

Reed Secure have an exciting opportunity for a Kennel Hand to join the UK’s largest Police Force!

If you have a passion for Dog’s, then this could be the perfect opportunity for you.

As a Kennel Hand you will be responsible for the following.

  • Feeding, grooming and exercising of Police Dogs.
  • Administrating dog medication as prescribed by the vet.
  • Cleaning kennels and surrounding areas.
  • Clearing dog excrement from exercise areas and kennels.
  •   General housekeeping.
  • Assisting in the dog school veterinary consulting room.
  • Accurate completion of daily kennel logs and veterinary treatment.
  • Whelping of brood 
  •  You will also be taking care of our Brood female dogs and young puppies from birth onwards and may be involved in training exercises under the supervision of accredited Instructors.

You will be working shifts, generally 06:30hrs - 16:30hrs (10hrs) or 11:00hrs - 21:00hrs (10hrs) to cover kennel duties 365 days a year.

Pay rate: Monday-Friday, £18.24, Saturday £23.77, Sunday £31.15.

You will be expected to work Bank Holidays including Christmas Day and Boxing Day (depending on how your shift pattern falls each year).

There may be occasions when leave is restricted on operational grounds (usually during summer months and school holidays).

There is also an expectation that you will be willing to work occasional night duties (21:00hrs to 07:00hrs) when we have a whelping brood female dog.

Candidates will be required to attend and successfully complete a two-day suitability assessment in the kennels at the Dog Training Establishment.

The Dog Training Establishment is in a location where there is no direct public transport.

Essential Criteria:

  •    Good physical fitness with the ability to handle and manage large breed working dogs.
  •   Excellent communication skills for both internal and external audiences.
  • Full UK Driving licence (including manual and automatic);
  • Confident around animals, specifically dogs which have been trained to bite.

Desirable Criteria:

  • UK Driving Licence C1/D1 Categories.
  •   Experience of working animals in a kennel, agricultural or veterinary environment.
