Job Title: Invasive Medical Lab Assistant

Grade: Band 3

Ward/Dept: Clinical Pathology – Specimen Reception

Trust: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust

Location: Queens Medical Centre Campus

Hours: Up to 37.5 hrs (Flexible)

As a teaching hospital, they are instrumental in the education and training of doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals. They have strong relationships with universities across the East Midlands, including the University of Nottingham, Nottingham Trent University and Loughborough University.

Nottingham University Hospitals have ambitious plans to improve their hospitals and the services they deliver for our patients. As well as the redevelopment of Nottingham City Hospital and the QMC, they are building a new NHS rehabilitation facility on the Stanford Hall Rehabilitation Estate near Loughborough, due to open next year.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Participate in the delivery of the Pathology service outside core hours, undertaking 24/7 shift working
  • Perform laboratory pre-analytical techniques according to the department’s Standard Operating Procedures
  • Follow laboratory processes for the referring of samples to external laboratories, using associated IT software where applicable
  • Demonstrate laboratory procedures to colleagues as part of the new staff induction training programme and assist in the coordination and training of MLA staff as appropriate
  • Perform sample reception duties including sample acceptance, receiving, sorting, labelling, bar coding and racking of samples on arrival.
  • Load samples onto pre-analytical automation
  • File, archive and retrieve samples, dispatch samples to referral sites as appropriate.
  • Answer telephone enquiries and perform visitor reception duties.
  • Perform general house-keeping duties including safe disposal of waste, general cleaning and tidying
  • Perform pre analytical and track equipment cleaning, calibration and maintenance in accordance with documented schedules
  • Maintain stocks of laboratory supplies including ensuring adequate supplies of general laboratory items.
  • Work flexibly and undertake any other duties commensurate with the grade as required.

To be successful in applying for this role you will need:

  • Education to NVQ3/A Level or equivalent.
  • Basic science qualification
  • Experience Can demonstrate numeric and literacy skills in the context of interacting with IT systems, data entry and using dashboards Computer literacy Previous experience of training and/or mentoring
  • Previous experience of laboratory work A/I Communication and relationship skills
  • Able to provide and review information in various forms with colleagues and or other Trust staff
  • Good interpersonal skills and able to work well in a team and as an individual
  • Role requires post holder to be on their feet for majority of shift
