This is your chance to play a critical role in our Engineering department, ensuring that the technical deliverables on our capital delivery schemes are of the highest quality.
Knowledge of potable water networks and treatment is preferred, a background in utilities or a similar infrastructure business is required to lead our Civil Engineering section. You have a Civil Engineering degree, preferably a chartered engineer, and extensive experience to line manage, mentor and supervise the work of others.

You will manage a Civil Engineering team comprised of both internal and external resources to examine and apply applicable procedures and principles to protect quality and ensure project technical delivery. You’ll manage and coordinate multiple projects engaging a multidisciplinary design approach. As the functional lead, you'll demonstrate that you're commercially aware, have a working knowledge of NEC contracts, and can effectively manage the risks associated with contracts and health and safety.

Working as part of an integrated project team and engineering department to impact outcomes and collaborate with stakeholders will require expertise creating teams and assisting them in forming good connections. You'll manage project workloads and resources, oversee line management and goal setting, and support, guide, and coach your team to ensure the best results are produced. Your dedication to driving continuous improvement through lessons learned strategies and encouraging professional growth will help to maintain a high performing Civil Engineering function.

What will you mainly be responsible for delivering?
  • Implement a safety strategy aligned with Construction Design and Management Regulations 2015 (CDM2015) as part of project delivery and enhance procedures and practices in this regard.
  • Ability to manage and co-ordinate multiple projects through the project teams.
  • Multidisciplinary design co-ordination.
  • Promotion and implementation of Innovation in design delivery, construction methodology and asset operation.
  • Ensure technical excellence and best practice in the delivery of project outputs.
  • Approve technical solutions, including standards and variations to standards.
  • Quality assurance following the relevant company Check, Review and Approve processes and QA management requirements.
  • Manage team workload, ensuring adequacy of team in terms of numbers and skills.
  • Performance manages staff, contractor and supplier teams engaged on the project to ensure efficiency targets set by the business are met in conjunction with satisfying all other project deliverables.
  • Support, guide, and mentor staff to ensure technical expertise is applied to projects.
  • Undertake Delegated Engineer, Mentor and/or Supervising Civil Engineer roles for the team promoting and encouraging Chartership with the ICE or CIWEM as appropriate.
  • Manage and liaise with contractors and sub-contractors working in an integrated design team.
  • Liaise with customers, internal and external stakeholders to ensure successful project delivery and to maintain and enhance the reputation of South East Water.
  • Implement lessons learnt strategies.
  • Promote and deliver Continuous Professional Development of the team.

What do you bring to the role?

Qualifications and Experience
  • A Degree in Civil Engineering, Chartered and preferably with extensive experience.
  • Commercially aware with a working knowledge of the NEC suite of contracts.
  • Substantial experience in the utility industry, preferably in potable water networks and treatment.
  • Significant experience in design, construction and maintenance of infrastructure and non-infrastructure assets, including treatment works, Booster plants, pipelines, services, and hydraulics.
  • An understanding of risk, assessment, and mitigations/controls in the relation to health and safety and contracts.
  • Experienced in technical delivery supporting projects and working in an integrated project team with consultants and contractors.
  • Experienced in managing a large resource group with all three associated People Management requirements (performance, development, recruitment).

  • Proven leadership abilities.
  • Excellent people management abilities, as well as team development and performance management experience.
  • Sets clear goals and objectives, as well as the ability to work autonomously and with minimal supervision.
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues and develop relationships with the ability to influence outcomes, staff, and stakeholders who are not necessarily in direct line management.
  • Technical Expert capable of exercising sound engineering judgement and making decisions in challenging situations.
  • Excellent team organisation abilities, as well as the ability to set up and manage procedures to ensure quality.
  • Strong technical report writing, editorial capabilities, and oral communication abilities.
