We're looking for a talented Lead Data Engineer with the experience and passion to lead a high-performing team of Data Engineers working to build and support data capabilities that are essential for DWP services.

As a Lead Software Engineer, you will be:

  • Promoting the value of Communities of Practice, encouraging members to contribute, build and maintain an effective professional community.
  • Defining, updating and implementing Career Pathways to enhance capability development, talent management and reduce attrition.
  • Defining and implementing the Data Engineering standards and Best Practices for DWP.
  • Understanding the demands and development of the profession in the wider industry and feed this into the capability roadmap.
  • Keeping abreast of new techniques, technologies and ways of working across the private and public sector.
  • Using expert coaching and mentoring skills empower the Community members to continually review and question ways of working, promoting an appetite for continuous improvement.
  • Overseeing Data Engineering recruitment and placing candidates into the most appropriate role.
  • Building and managing senior stakeholder relationships, influencing outcomes and ensuring risks and issues are resolved appropriately.

Your essential skills and experience:

  • You will be an experienced Data Engineer with significant knowledge of Data Engineering, and you will understand the value that Data Engineering holds within a digital function.
  • You will be a passionate advocate of communities of practice - you can confidently articulate the value of them and have experience building self-sustaining professional communities.
  • Excellent leadership and stakeholder management skills - you can identify and build relationships at all levels, and can negotiate and influence at a senior level on issues and the development and enhancement of services, products & systems.

You'll be based in your choice of one of our brilliant digital hubs in Birmingham, Blackpool, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle-upon-Tyne or Sheffield, whichever is most convenient for you.

We also have all the tools and tech to work flexibly. We operate a hybrid working model. You can expect to work from home 60% of the time.

We offer competitive pay of up to £77,740 per annum.

Additionally, a Digital Allowance of up to £12,255 per annum is available for exceptional candidates, based on our assessment of your skills and experience.

You'll be eligible for a brilliant civil service pension with employer contributions of 28.9%, worth up to £22.466 a year.

You'll get a generous leave package starting at 26 days, rising to 31 over time.

Plus, all the usual bank holidays, and the option to take up to 3 extra days off a month on flexi leave.
