About The RoleThe use of data has leveraged so much within Matalan in the last few years, we're on an exciting journey to drive an insight/data lead culture using connected and trusted data to unlock new opportunities and efficiencies.
Working as part of our data team but also focussing and partnering with the entire business; we're looking for a Lead Data Scientist to grow and manage the Data Science team.
You'll design and deliver insightful and commercially astute analytics projects that support strategic decision-making, designing and driving a Data Science roadmap to improve the level of analytics capability across the business.
This is great time to be joining the data & insight function at Matalan as there is a lot of focus on driving value from our data and influencing key decisions. There is a real appetite for this skill set and utilisation of data within the business.
Key Responsibilities -- Leading and growing the data science function to deliver a range of projects across the whole of Matalan, covering Marketing, Ecommerce, Trading, Stock planning and more.
- Driving innovation around the business with a strong focus on delivering business value.
- Developing existing AI/ML tools including Dataiku and Google Cloud Platform products.
- Building models to answer complex business questions and to proactively inform business strategy and direction.
- Build and validate predictive models to grow business confidence.
- Working within data leadership, setting strategy and direction for the growth of data within Matalan.
- Cultivating relationships with stakeholders across Matalan including developing credibility with senior leadership.
About You
- Experience in a numerate subject with work experience delivering data science solutions.
- Significant experience of applying a range of data science and machine learning techniques to deliver business value.
- Ability to benchmark and prioritise the possible impact of data science projects, drawing on a wide range of previous experience to give a sense of the potential.
- Advanced proficiency in at least two of SQL/R/Python/similar programming languages
- Experience using BI Tools such as Power BI to set up dashboards with an emphasis on providing value to the business
- Experience of leading a team of Data Scientists, with the ability to develop both the technical capabilities and softer skills of an individual
- Experience managing the data science project lifecycle
- Credibility with stakeholders at all levels of the business, able to expertly convert complex data and analysis into concise and easy to understand presentations and insights.
- Commercially astute analytics projects that support strategic decision-making
