SP Energy Networks (SPEN) are working to achieve 2030 transmission network targets set by the Scottish and UK Government. SPEN will invest over £5bn in transmission projects across our transmission network in central and southern Scotland by 2030.

A Lead Engineer with SPEN  leads and coaches a team to effectively deliver a programme of modernisation and repair and ensure cable systems, including associated equipment, are inspected and maintained to industry standards whilst providing technical leadership and guidance.

What you'll be doing

You will be reporting to the Circuits Manager in Transmission Network Operations, responsible for the operational management of the cable systems in SPT from 33kv to 400kV.  This will focus on inspection, maintenance and fault repair of the cable systems and may also include the refurbishment of the cable systems to extend the life of the asset.

The role will involve Leading a small team, providing clear goals and direction to maximise productivity, quality and effectiveness, ensuring we are meeting our policy, H&S and ESQCR requirements for managing a transmission asset.  This will also require the close financial management of all activities, including forecasting through-out the year on all activities and tracking our performance against regulatory allowances,  with the goal of outperforming allowances and minimising the cost to the customer.

You will require sufficient technical knowledge of the current cable systems installed in Scotland and each of their unique operating characteristics.  The role will require to provide technical input into all matters associated with the cable systems, working closely with our Asset Manager to ensure we maximise the efficiency and operational life from each asset to replace before end of life.

The role will also require working with the full Circuits team sharing knowledge and experience, supporting all areas as required from OHL, Vegetation Management and Capital Modernisation programmes to maximise the productivity of the Circuits team.

To achieve this you will require to:

  • Ensure that your team are aware of the business objectives as well as setting, discussing and reviewing targets and performance.

  • Track monthly performance on the business scorecard with clear targets

  • Develop and motivate your team, including trainees.

  • Manage performance by celebrating success and by dealing with poor performance.

  • Develop an understanding of the relevant trade union agreements.

  • Carry out site and operational audits on your team.

  • Ensure team is aware of and complies with Company Health, Safety and Environmental requirements and update them on particular issues as they arise working with your team towards a zero accident culture.

  • Capture feedback and issues from Operational Safety and Compliance Audits, Quality Audits etc and address any non-conformances.

  • Provide monthly updates on performance and develop and implement agreed solutions to areas of concern.

  • Comply with OFGEM and internal levels of service

  • Respond appropriately to Customer Complaints, taking ownership and resolving as appropriate

  • Deliver excellent customer service to all aspects of your operation and instil this in your team. Actively promote customer service standards within area of responsibility.

  • Ensure assigned resources are deployed to maximum effectiveness.
