Job description

The national Property Risks & Coverage team at Keoghs has an exciting opportunity for a talented commercial insurance lawyer to join its Large & Complex Loss team. This opportunity have arisen due to our strong market growth and client wins. Whilst commercial insurance focussed, someone with a commercial litigation or professional indemnity background should consider a move to Keoghs to diversify and build upon their career and embark upon the road to partnership.
Working with the team’s most senior technicians/partners you will have access to the most high profile, complex, technical and valuable property related insurance disputes covering issues ranging from: defended liability claims for property damage, major property loss subrogation, policy coverage and insurance fraud. Keoghs has a client list which includes most of the leading UK property insurers and which is the envy of our competitors. Our involvement often begins at FNOL.
The successful candidate will work directly alongside one of our Partners in the running of a varied case load and will be responsible for the building and development of a team of up to three assistant lawyers.
The Keoghs’ PRC team has a one team ethos where cross office and collaborative working are encouraged. Key Accountabilities

The key accountabilities for these roles will typically include:
Case Handling:
Day to day the role will include cradle to grave handling and ownership of a mixed peril/type case load typically valued in excess of £100K.
File handling tasks on Partner files will include (but are not limited to):
1. Initial file reviews
2. Investigating factual and evidential matters along with evidence gathering from a range of sources
3. Instructing experts and counsel
4. Drafting detailed, succinct client reports and other documents more generally
5. Leading conferences with counsel and experts
6. Ensuring compliance with the SRA Standards, Regulations & Code of Conduct
Operational
From a people perspective you will support the Deputy Business Unit Director in
  • The management of a team of up to 3 lawyers in terms of service delivery and personal professional development which will include technical supervision;

  • In ensuring that all members of the mini team have appropriate objectives in place and are measured against them in accordance with Keoghs’ performance management processes;

  • In the recruitment and retention of personnel into the wider PRC team in order to maintain profitability and the ideal operating model; feeding into the PRC talent pipeline;

  • In the effective, fair and transparent application of Keoghs’ people processes and procedures;

  • By communicating in a clear, concise and engaging way to promote morale & motivation and in the giving of feedback.

  • Sales / Business Development
    From a sales / BD perspective you will support Greg Dawson
  • The day to day management of a nominated account(s);

  • The preparation and delivery of client MI;

  • The preparation and delivery of client training events

  • Working Hours
    35 hours per week contractually
    Flexible/agile working to suit the demands of the business
    Such other hours as necessary to comply with client/court obligations.

    Experience, Skills and Qualifications

    Recruitment Criteria:
  • Legal qualification require i.e. Solicitor/FILEX

  • Previous Commercial Insurance / Commercial Litigation / Professional Indemnity / Defendant property insurance litigation experience

  • A knowledge and understanding of the types of disputes handled by the PRC team and the claims handled by the department’s insurer clients

  • Strong legal and procedural knowledge

  • Desirable
    Previous commercial insurance or in-house insurer experience
    Required Soft Skills:
  • An ability to prioritise workload

  • Ability to pay attention to detail

  • Ability to work with case management systems

  • The personal skills to deal with such work as major and expensive litigation involving liaison with senior claims handlers, adjuster’s brokers and insureds
