Job description

To work collaboratively with the Saving Babies Lives (SBL) team and clinical audit department to collect, analyse and report on statistical information in line with Care Group, Trust and National requirements. Ensure that high standards of care in relation to public health are provided and maintained and act appropriately when standards are not being maintained Undertake staff appraisal in line with Trust policy. To work collaboratively with the SBL Lead Midwife, input into Maternity Governance, report risk management issues to appropriate personnel as per Trust policy. Be proactive in the development of practice/ services within area of expertise, through business planning process / service development, in conjunction with Senior Managers. Effectively manage sickness, absence, and attendance within the Trusts Attendance Management Policy Communication and working relationships To ensure that all team members report change in patient progress effectively, both verbally and in written form. Ensure that accurate, legible, and comprehensive midwifery records according to NMC and local guidelines. Where appropriate, interpret and present clinical information to clients and their families, demonstrating the highest levels of interpersonal and communication skills. Giving highly complex information to clients and families where there may be barriers to understanding. Provide relevant verbal and written information. To actively support staff working in highly distressing situations. To respond appropriately to ineffective communication techniques and styles used by staff, taking first line performance management action in the event of continued issues. To initiate basic training for staff in relation to communication strategies when discussing Tobacco Dependence. To demonstrate sensitivity in dealing with complex and confidential information from clients, families and colleagues, giving advice and support when necessary. Take appropriate action where necessary. To ensure that information/decisions are cascaded appropriately both to junior and senior staff using tools such as regular timetabled meetings (for which minutes are produced), newsletters, memos and other relevant communication strategies e.g., Senior Midwives Meeting (attend or send representative). To maintain collaborative working relationships and effective communications between all members of the multi-disciplinary team, resolving conflict and working within the team to ensure a high standard of co-ordinated client care. a) Personal and people development Assess and identify own development needs in relation to midwifery knowledge and competencies required to meet the demands of the role. Take responsibility for continuing professional development and performance whilst maintaining a personal development plan/portfolio in accordance with registration requirements. Make effective use of appropriate learning opportunities and apply the knowledge and skills gained to practice. As a Lead Midwife Undertake annual mandatory training updates and other relevant courses in line with Trust and local policies. b) Management of people To work collaboratively with the Saving Babies Lives (SBL) team and clinical audit department to collect, analyse and report on statistical information in line with Care Group, Trust and National requirements. Communicate effectively, throughout the multidisciplinary team and liaising with outside agencies, especially where the womens and families ability to do so is compromised by acting as the patients advocate. In accordance with the Data Protection Act, ensure own and staffs ability to input and retrieve patient/staff information from computer and paper-based systems and that accurate and contemporaneous patient and staff records are kept in line with the Clinical Negligence Scheme for Trust (CNST) Standards and Freedom of Information Act. Undertake recruitment, retention and manage performance related issues, including disciplinary matters and complaints. Formulate, review, and implement clinical policies and guidelines within the area of responsibility. Promote best practice in relation to clinical risk and governance issues and identify areas for improvement and contribute to the achievement of CNST. Provide regular, clear written reports on project progress and quarterly reports to SBL Lead To work with all members of the multi-professional team to develop services that meet organisational and contractual requirements, ensuring that the effective provision of all aspects of clinical care are maintained at a high standard
