Job description

As the Lead Specialist Respiratory Physiotherapist with special interest in Pulmonary Rehabilitation you will provide specialist physiotherapy clinical expertise and management experience for this service, as well as supporting the band 8a in their team leadership position. 

The post holder will provide and support more junior physiotherapists providing pulmonary rehabilitation across the county, providing on going innovation and development for this part of the service.  This will be a leading part of their role.

The post holder is a key player in providing Specialist Respiratory clinical knowledge in this specialist field, acting as a main source of respiratory clinical physiotherapy expertise for their own team and health professionals across the local area.

As well as working with their own team and community staff of around 12 staff, they will work closely with the Consultant Clinical Lead and other colleagues in the Respiratory Medicine Department in the local District General Hospital (Royal United Hospital).


To lead, organise, develop and be responsible for the Pulmonary Rehabilitation service for patients with chronic respiratory diseases.
To be responsible for the advanced specialist physiotherapy/rehabilitation of patients with chronic lung disease seen in the Community Respiratory Service.
To assist in the development of the service, supporting the band 8a in implementing changes to working practice/service delivery.
To lead in service developments around pulmonary rehabilitation.
Undertake educational lectures for patients as well as to be involved with the ongoing training and development of staff in the provision of pulmonary rehabilitation.
To monitor caseloads of all physiotherapy staff, ensuring appropriate distribution of work.
To participate in departmental management to facilitate an efficient and responsive service.
To lead in service developments around pulmonary rehabilitation.

Main Responsibilities
To interpret and analyse clinical and non-clinical facts to form accurate diagnosis and prognoses and to recommend the best intervention.
Using highly Specialist Respiratory skills, develop individualised management and treatment plans using advanced clinical reasoning.
To demonstrate highly developed manual dexterity in applying assessment procedures or performing treatment techniques as professionally applicable.
To co-ordinate the triaging of patients with chronic respiratory disease to an appropriate rehabilitation setting and to continually assess and monitor these patients through an exercise programme.  To also support others in this role.
To accept clinical responsibility for a designated specialist caseload of patients and to organise this effectively and efficiently with regards to clinical priorities and use of time.
To provide spontaneous and planned advice, teaching and instruction to relatives, carers, patients and other professions to promote understanding of the aims of the Community Respiratory Service and to ensure a consistent approach to patient care.
To critically evaluate a patient’s response to treatment and adapt patient management accordingly.
To work closely with all members of the team to ensure patients have planned programmes of care to achieve prevention of admission or early discharge and management at home wherever possible.
To ensure the integration of evidence-based practice within the Community Respiratory Service.

The Ideal Candidate
To be responsible for maintaining own competency to practice through CPD activities and maintain a portfolio which reflects personal development. To ensure that own practice meets the required professional standards of physiotherapy practice.
Assist with supervision or training of other staff as required including physiotherapy students.
Participate in the staff appraisal scheme as an appraiser and appraisee and to be responsible for complying with agreed personal development programmes to meet required knowledge and competencies.
To be responsible for the safe and competent use of physiotherapy equipment by patients and student physiotherapists, carers, assistants and technical instructors through teaching, training and supervision of practice.
To act as a role model for junior staff.
To use excellent communication skills to convey both simple and complex or sensitive information.
To use a variety of verbal and graphic media appropriate to the patient’s needs to maximise their understanding of their care.  Motivation and persuasion may be required to maximise a patient’s rehabilitation potential.
To work within the guidelines, policies and procedures of the Community Health and Social Care Services and those of their own professional body.
