Learned and Professional Societies Officer

The Foundation for Science and Technology is looking to appoint a part time Learned and Professional Societies Officer (around 24 hours per week). The postholder will be responsible for providing support and guidance on governance matters to Learned and Professional Societies who are members of the Foundation for Science and Technology. The key elements of the role are:

• Responding to requests from individual Learned and Professional Societies in matters of governance, policy, professional practice, and charity and company law.
• Supporting such societies through the process of changes to governance status (seeking or amending Royal Charters; obtaining Charitable Incorporated Organisation status; amending Articles of Associations, etc)
• Producing a quarterly newsletter for Learned and Professional Societies, containing for example latest relevant governance and charity news and anonymised examples of advice given to members.
• Writing and updating Guidance Notes on key governance issues affecting Learned and Professional Societies
• Keeping abreast of relevant changes in company and charity law, guidance and best practice, in order to be able to support Learned and Professional Societies members.
• Identifying Learned and Professional Societies who are not members of the Foundation for Science and Technology and encouraging them to join.

The ideal candidate will have significant experience working with or within Learned and/or Professional Societies in a governance role. They will have extensive knowledge of the relevant areas of charity and company law and best practice. They will be ICT literate.

The role is designed as 24 hours per week, and can be completed flexibly to fit in with other commitments. The Foundation for Science and Technology is based in London and the post holder can work from a mixture of home and office. A work laptop will be provided.

As the Foundation for Science and Technology is a small organisation, the Learned and Professional Societies Officer may occasionally be required to support other activities of the Foundation.
