Job description

Closing Date: 23.59 hours GMT on Thursday 01 February 2024 Birmingham City University is a large and dynamic place to study right in the heart of the city. We currently have an opportunity for a Learner Developer in Academic Literacy to join our Centre for Academic Success within the Education Development Service (EDS). The role will suit early career or experienced education professionals interested in supporting students within a Higher Education institution. As a faculty-focused Learner Developer you will be at the forefront of student academic development in the University, developing and delivering group and individual support activities and interventions to students from all four faculties. In addition you will also consult with, support and deliver activities to academic staff and teams to develop and implement pedagogic approaches that positively impact university priorities. Through effective design and delivery of learning support activities, the Learner Developer will: Devise, deliver and document bespoke tutorials, workshops, interventions, and individual schemes of work, ensuring current, relevant, and effective teaching is employed to meet students’ discipline, level and individual needs.  Consult with and support Senior Learner Developers to evaluate feedback from students, own practice and faculty requirements and develop strategic responses to identified needs and issues. Develop and deliver staff development workshops, consultancy and guidance around learner development, student experience and student support. Support the development and delivery of projects, initiatives and activities that enhance learner development and success. Motivate students, raise aspirations, increase their confidence, and challenge and support them in their academic study. Maintain accurate records of the service provided and student engagement using appropriate University systems. Assist the Head of Learner Development in evaluating the service offered and identify potential improvements.  Educated to at least degree level, you will have: The capacity to deliver academic support to students in academic writing and study skills A teaching qualification and/or teaching experience in a Secondary, Further Education or Higher Education context. A strong proactive and collaborative outlook, with a desire to develop partnerships that impact student success. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.  Strong IT skills. AFHEA status or the ability to achieve this within a year A supportive, positive and non-judgemental attitude. The Education Development Service works across the institution to develop and embed innovative learning and teaching practices and provide academic support to students and professional development to academic staff.
