Job description

We are the world’s largest university press. We have both a worldwide reach and a personal understanding of local needs, partnering on the ground to adapt publications and resources to meet the individual needs of communities, societies, and countries. We partner with researchers, educators, and technology partners to stay ahead of the changing ways people around the world are accessing and sharing knowledge. With a presence in more than 50 countries and millions of customers around the world, an idea launched at OUP can have global impact.

About the Role

You will be responsible for developing and promoting an evidence-based approach to pedagogy and Learning Design for Oxford ELT.  This will involve developing Learning Design principles and practices, and supporting their application to learning content – both print and digital.  You will also be responsible for other areas of pedagogy – including curriculum frameworks, working with language acquisition, teaching and edtech experts outside OUP, and promoting OUP’s pedagogical innovations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop evidence-based guidance for a Learning Design approach across ELT, drawing both on academic research in language learning/teaching and on customer research and learner data collected within OUP ELT
  • Work with publishing teams on the application of the LD approach in ELT content
  • Complete the development, launch, use and ongoing review of the curriculum frameworks
  • Develop content for Thought Leadership communications – e.g. for Position Papers, presentations and podcasts to promote pedagogical support for teachers
  • Build a network of contacts between Oxford ELT and researchers – from active consultants, to looser relationships with academics and researchers interested in pedagogy research – to ensure our work is informed by up-to-date and validated research
  • Provide pedagogy expertise and consultancy for publishing and other developmental projects, where required, working with editorial, UX, technology or marketing colleagues
  • Communicate and educate internally on the benefits of LD approach and curriculum frameworks
  • Keep up-to-date with latest developments in Learning Design and Pedagogy relating to ELT and communicate to others within the division and wider OUP.

We operate a hybrid working policy that requires a minimum of 2 days per week in the Oxford office.

About You

These attributes are essential:

  • A solid understanding of how current pedagogical principles in ELT can be applied in Learning Design (both print and digital)
  • Understanding of the needs of language teachers and learners around the world
  • Good communication skills – including giving presentations and written communications.
  • Able to carry out deep critical analyses of problems and solutions relating to Learning Design and Pedagogy
  • Able to gain support for change with teams that are not reporting to you

Experience in any of these areas will give you a strong advantage:

  • Experience of language teaching or teacher training
  • Knowledge of issues relating to ELT learning materials
  • Experience with digital learning content and online learning environments
  • Experience with learning analytics and AI tools for supporting learning

Benefits

We care about work/life balance here at OUP. With this in mind we offer 25 days’ holiday that rises with service, plus bank holidays and Christmas closure (3-days) and a 35-hour working week. We are open to discussing flexibility in respect to working patterns, dependent on role. We also have a great variety of active employee networks and societies.

We help make your money go further by contributing to your pension up to 12%, offering loans and savings schemes through our partnership with Salary Finance, in addition to travel to work schemes and access to a wide range of local discounts.

Please see our Rewards and Recognition page for more information.
