About us

UCLIC is a world-leading Centre of Excellence in Human-Computer Interaction teaching and research, studying interactions between people and technology and working collaboratively with the research community and industry. It straddles UCL Computer Science and UCL Psychology and Language Sciences. The Department of Computer Science is a large department with over 120 academic staff. It is one of the top-rated research institutions in the world, and currently the top recipient of Horizon 2020 funding in Europe. It sits at the nexus of a broad range of inter-disciplinary collaborations across UCL. The Division of Psychology and Language Sciences (PALS) was ranked 2nd in the world in Psychology in the Shanghai World Rankings. This position will be primarily based within UCL Computer Science, however, all UCLIC staff have fruitful interactions with both parent departments regardless of individual affiliation.

About the role

We are looking for an early career academic in the area of Human Computer Interaction to join the UCL Interaction Centre (UCLIC). We particularly welcome applications from candidates with interests in the following areas: Physical Computing, Internet of Things (IoT), Tangible Interfaces and Ubicomp. We are also especially interested in candidates in designing, prototyping and deploying physical and digital interventions in-the-wild and who would be well placed to teach Interaction Design. This is a wonderful opportunity to join UCL as it expands its interdisciplinary and leading-edge research agenda. UCL has a long track record of championing leading edge research (e.g. through the UCL Grand Challenges) and has established collaborations with industrial partners and local health providers, including the UCL Institute of Healthcare Engineering, the Global Disability Innovation Hub and the recently launched Institute of Mental Health.

Campus life is integral to the student and staff experience and it is important that staff continue to be engaged in the culture and life on campus, providing excellent services to students and staff in-person when needed and for teams to come together in-person. At UCLIC we are co-designing the new future of the way we work to make the best of hybrid working. There is an expectation that:

  • academic staff meet in-person informally every week during term time for a coffee
  • academic, research and teaching staff, and PhD students are expected to attend our weekly seminar series in person
  • academic and teaching staff meet in-person quarterly for a whole team day.

We also have a range of online events where staff interact that include:

  • staff meetings
  • twice-weekly co-writing groups

About you

You will have an outstanding research track record in the relevant subject area. Salary will be in the UCL Grade 8 range of: £51,474 - £60,521 inc. London Allowance, dependent on experience.

Please see the UCL Advert for the job description with person specification and further particulars on how to apply. When applying, please take note of the following requirements:

(1) A complete curriculum vitae, which must include: education history, details of previous employment, details of current or most recent employer (name and address of current organisation, job title and duties), list of publications or other research/practice outputs, details of membership of any professional organisations and a list of referees that can be contacted.

(2) A statement of your research interests and plans (1-2 pages).

(3) A statement of your teaching interests (1-2 pages).

(4) A cover letter detailing how you meet each of the criteria set out in the person specification.
