A British Art & Design School with a 150-year history, Cardiff School of Art & Design (CSAD) is housed in a state-of-the-art building on the Llandaff Campus and is home to students united by ambition and a true passion for creative enquiry. They are artists, designers, makers and thinkers in the fields of architecture, design, fashion, fine art, and a range of craft disciplines. The school is also home to FabLab, the Perceptual Experience Laboratory, Spin-out companies Fovotech and HUG™, and a number of major research and innovation initiatives that cohere around visual perception and user-centred design, linking disciplines from fine art to computer science.
Principal duties and responsibilities
Cardiff School of Art and Design (CSAD) is looking to appoint an excellent, all-round Product Design lecturer with the ability to make exciting contributions to the School’s teaching, research and innovation portfolio. The post holder will teach on the BA and BSc Product Design and MSc Product Design programmes, as well as contributing to a suite of cross-school modules at all levels as part of CSAD’s unique curriculum. CSAD offers an interdisciplinary curriculum experience, and it is important that the post holder values this approach.
The post holder will contribute to collaborative interdisciplinary projects in research, innovation and teaching. They will also contribute to a vibrant teaching and world-leading research culture by embedding their expertise in the curriculum, engaging with colleagues, and developing research outputs or impact relevant to their area of expertise.
You will be expected to contribute to the research profile of the department and to meet the qualitative and quantitative requirements for submission to the next Research Excellence Framework.
What we are looking for
• A good level of knowledge relevant to the subject and professional area.
• A sound understanding of pedagogy.
• A sound understanding of research/innovation and scholarly activity.
• A sound knowledge of:
• Industrial and Product Design
• Design process with a focus on: Ideation, Concept generation, Prototyping (low and mid-fidelity), User/Human-Centred Design process, Drawings fundamentals for design, Design for Manufacture, Computer-Aided Design, Service Design.
• Art and Design student entrepreneurship
• Ability to develop teaching and/or research programmes and the provision of learning support.
• Ability to design teaching and learning material.
• Ability to employ appropriate assessment methods.
• Ability to identify areas for improvement and to use initiative and problem- solving skills to improve performance.
• Ability to communicate and disseminate complex and conceptual ideas in a variety of ways – presentations at conferences, reports on findings, publications, feedback etc.
• Experience of teaching or equivalent.
• Experience of research or equivalent, for example staying up to date with developments in your field.
• Experience of working in the design and/or manufacturing industry.
• Experience of working with others in a supervisory/guiding/supporting/mentoring capacity.
• A good honours degree.
• An earned doctoral level qualification or a track record of nationally or internationally significant research outputs (for example, articles, conference papers, artefacts, patents, reports, etc, developed using the rigorous application of recognised design methodologies) published in the last 5 years that could formulate a PhD by publication.
You will be an enthusiastic and friendly professional with excellent communication and interpersonal skills coupled with a commitment to providing an excellent student experience. An established or promising research profile and very good teaching experience on relevant programmes is essential.
