The Birmingham Institute of Fashion and Creative Art (BIFCA) based in Wuhan, China, is a sector leading collaboration between Wuhan Textile University and Birmingham City University. It is one of only a handful of such partnerships. BIFCA offers a unique cross-cultural experience and provides an excellent environment for innovative teaching. Students successfully completing their programmes at BIFCA are able to gain a dual award from both BCU and WTU, they can choose between studying their whole programme in China or studying part in China and completing their programme at BCU, starting in year two.

BIFCA has now seen its first graduating students, its teaching commitment is expanding, and we are seeking a lecturer for our Visual Communication area to contribute to its continuing development. The position offers a unique opportunity to live and work in a popular part of China on a 2-year Fixed Term contract.

About the Role:

We are seeking a Lecturer to teach on our Graphic Communication degree and work as part of a small team of Lecturers, to liaise with colleagues at the partner institute and those at BCU in the UK. To support the Course and School in the successful delivery of the partnership.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Use appropriate learning, teaching, support and assessment methods and provide feedback to students.
  • Ensure that module design and delivery comply with quality standards and regulations of the university.
  • Supervise student projects and the academic elements of field trips.
  • Monitor student progress and provide support and advice to students as appropriate.
  • Contribute to the design and delivery of engaging learning experiences, supporting colleagues and students.
  • Apply knowledge gained from practice and scholarship to teaching.
  • To contribute to teamwork and build positive and effective working relationships with colleagues at BCU and WTU
  • Willingness to engage in formal staff development activities.

Skills and Experience:

The candidate must be able to have demonstrable experience/ expertise (preferably from a background in graphic design) in at least one of the following areas:

  • Graphic Design
  • Typography
  • User Experience
  • Publishing and Editorial
  • Brand Design & Advertising
  • Packaging Design
  • Interactive design

The applicant will have relevant experience in teaching at HE level within one or more of the areas indicated above. Be able to demonstrate a grasp of the planning, preparation and delivery of teaching materials in a studio-based teaching environment. Knowledge of Adobe Creative suite is essential and its use within a design context.

Candidates would also have to work within a team of fellow academics and technicians and should have good presentation and communications skills, be educated to degree level (or equivalent) level would be required, master’s qualification and professional experience would also be desirable.

Birmingham City University is a diverse place to study, with its origins in the UK's first purpose built municipal art school and many connections to the creative industries. The home course is in the School of Visual Communication, which is part of the new Birmingham Institute of Creative Arts, which aims to be an art school for the 21st century, transforming the opportunities for our students to work across the creative and cultural industries and beyond. The BIFCA based course is part of a set of three courses alongside Digital Media Technology and Landscape Architecture, delivered at our Wuhan campus.
