The opportunity

Central Saint Martins is a world-leading centre for arts and design education. Graphic Communication Design is one of CSM’s eight academic programmes and is comprised of three courses: BA (Honours) Graphic Communication Design, MA Graphic Communication Design and MA Communicating Complexity. Our mission is to facilitate a large heterogenous community of students and staff to thrive through graphic design and communication practice in diverse and meaningful ways. We ask and answer questions through and about Graphic Communication Design

We are currently recruiting two lecturers to take up roles from September 2024:

  • Practices Tutor Computation, BA (Hons) Graphic Communication Design (0.6 FTE, work pattern M, Tu, W)
  • Lecturer, MA Graphic Communication Design (0.6 FTE, M or Tu, W, Th or F with some negotiation possible based on responsibility sharing)

BA Graphic Communication and MA Graphic Communication Design are well-established and globally respected courses that have influenced and informed industry and practice across the field of graphic design in the most open sense. Our staff value pedagogic innovation, technically and contextually informed practice, and explorative approaches to the possibilities of our disciplines. 

For these roles, we are particularly interested in meeting candidates who bring critical perspectives on graphic design informed by in-depth engagements with creative computing. The lecturers who take up these posts will provide high-quality curriculum, teaching, assessment, and feedback. Working as part of a course and programme team, they will liaise with technical colleagues, participate in quality and enhancement processes, recruiting of students, and contributing to our external profile.

Both lecturers will also engage with research, knowledge exchange or other scholarly projects. Development of capacity for research and knowledge exchange is a current priority for GCD, CSM and UAL. These posts have significant potential for early career academics wishing to develop their careers on these pathways. There are currently PhD funding opportunities ringfenced for University of the Arts London academic staff. 

Successful candidates will be expected to work in accordance with current university academic policy and frameworks as well as contribute to the vision and strategic positioning of the programme.

About you

You will have of experience delivery and planning in an educational environment. You will have an innovative practice situated somewhere at the intersection of creative computing and graphic design. You will be committed to working as part a team to nurture vibrant, experimental, and diverse cultures of learning. You will have an inventive and flexible approach to students’ learning experience and high aspirations for their achievement, their professional futures and the programme’s development. 

You will have an undergraduate qualification in graphic design or an adjacent field. If you are an applicant for the Lecturer, MA Graphic Communication Design role, you will also have a postgraduate qualification and a track record of contributions to the advancement of one or more fields of relevance to the course. Applicants who are interested in combining this role with PhD study will be prioritised.

We plan on holding interviews in person, and you will also be and asked to lead a micro-teaching session with a small group of current students or recent graduates of the course.
