Southampton is ranked 12th in the UK (Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023) and 81st globally (QS World University Rankings 2024), with an international reputation for leading research, teaching, and enterprise activities. The School of Geography of Environmental Science was ranked sixth among all UK universities in the 2024 subject league table published by The Guardian.

The School of Geography & Environmental Science is seeking to appoint a Lecturer orAssociate Professor in Human Geography.

This appointment will strengthen the Population, Health and Wellbeing (PHeW) research group and wider Human Geography community. Existing research focuses on interactions between the (physical, economic, social and cultural) environment and (physical and mental) health and wellbeing at local and global scales, including: social and spatial health inequalities, geographies of care, more-than-human geographies and on health, food systems, access to safe water and public health, population modelling, and social and spatial epidemiology.

We welcome applications from scholars active in one or more of these areas, and especially in one or more of the following areas which we hope to develop:

  • Climate change and mental or physical health and wellbeing e.g. climate anxiety
  • Social and spatial health inequalities and climate change e.g. climate displacement
  • Health governance and community engagement
  • Feminist, queer or gender geographies related to climate and/or health and wellbeing

We welcome applicants committed to working across the sub-disciplines of geography, with scholars in other disciplines, and with a mixture of approaches and methods, but would particularly welcome contributions in one or more of the following: qualitative methods, social theory, community engagement, or inclusive participatory research methods.

Teaching activities for this post will be primarily on the BA Geography programmes, with a possible contribution to the School’s MSc programmes. They will involve lectures, tutorials, practicals, seminars, and/or fieldwork. We welcome applicants committed to teaching across these programmes, including on core introductory modules, research methods, training modules, and residential fieldtrips. There may also be scope for developing new modules in specialist disciplinary areas and for developing innovative modes of teaching and learning. We welcome applicants interested in, and/or experienced with, decolonising the curriculum. Training towards a Post-Graduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP) qualification will be provided as appropriate. The School and University also offer mentorship support and a variety of opportunities for skills-building and professional development.

The School of Geography and Environmental Science is committed to fostering a culture of equality, diversity and inclusion. We welcome applications from suitably qualified candidates, and particularly encourage applications from candidates belonging to groups who are under-represented within academic posts at the University, including, but not limited to: people from Black and minority ethnic groups; and disabled people. The School is committed to providing equal opportunities for all and offers a range of family friendly policies, flexi-time and flexible working. We are a Disability Confident employer and the School holds a bronze Athena SWAN award.

*In your application, you should make clear whether you are applying for Level 5 (Lecturer) or Level 6 (Associate Professor) and pay particular attention to the short answer questions in the application form.*

The post is tenable from 1st September 2024.

Informal enquiries may be made to Professor Justin Sheffield (Head of School) or Professor Emma Roe (Leader of the Population, Health and Wellbeing research group).

We are committed to equality, diversity and inclusion and welcome applicants who support our mission of inclusivity.

Apply by midnight on the closing date. For assistance contact Recruitment, quoting the job reference.
