Salary: 

Lecturer: £45,585 to £48,350 per annum

Senior Lecturer: £56,021 to £59,421 per annum

The Role

 

Newcastle University Population and Health Sciences institute is seeking to appoint a Lecturer/ Senior Lecturer in Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism.

 

As part of the role, you will be expected to contribute to curriculum development and the wider academic, scholarly and professional requirements of the Institute.

 

You will develop and lead research programmes in the area of nutrition and exercise metabolism, complementing and extending our existing strengths in this area and contributing to our team science approach in Nutrition and exercise. An interest in, and ability to teach, sports nutrition and/or metabolomics would be welcomed.

 

You will be based within the Population Health Science Institute and become an active member of the Human Nutrition and Exercise Research Centre (HNERC), https://www.ncl.ac.uk/medical-sciences/research/research-themes/hnerc/

 

You will be expected to develop a focussed programme of innovative research in your topic area which will enhance our existing laboratory technical excellence. Your research interests and methods will complement and extend our existing programmes.

 

We would welcome candidates interested in therapeutic applications of nutrition-exercise interaction especially in diabetes, cancer, musculoskeletal function or ageing. You would be able to capitalise on a well-established physical research environment in HNERC with excellent nutrition, exercise, extreme environment, sensory, and analytical facilities, and the opportunity to access proteomics through NUPPA and our Biomedical Research Centre.

 

You will work closely with colleagues in the School of Biomedical, Nutrition and Sports Sciences to deliver an innovative programme of research-led teaching on undergraduate and postgraduate taught courses.

 

The post is offered at either Lecturer (Grade G) or Senior Lecturer (Grade H). The level of appointment will be determined by meeting the requirements of the person specification and job description. Appointment at Senior Lecturer level should demonstrate significant achievement in research/scholarship, teaching, and leadership in a HE environment.

Key Accountabilities

  • To shape strategically current research topics in the HNERC, in consultation and collaboration with appropriate senior management of the Population Health Science Institute 
  • To work independently and to take a lead in developing research; manage research, ensuring the projects are within budget, meet milestones and their deadlines for completion 
  • To demonstrate expertise and academic leadership with a view to supporting and developing academic researchers, collaborators and post graduate students in the Population Health Sciences Institute, HNERC and NUCoRE in Healthier Lives 
  • Mentoring and co-ordinating the work of Early Career Researchers and support staff, including identifying training and development needs 
  • To create and maintain strong collaborative links with other researchers based in the University and beyond; to develop collaborative links with international colleagues working in your area.  
  • To have the knowledge, skills and experience to bid successfully for research funds from prestigious funders 
  • To publish in high impact peer-reviewed journals and to present findings/ research papers at national and international conferences 
  • To work in collaboration with SBNSS colleagues to develop and deliver both UG and PG programmes
  • To carry out other management and administrative tasks to within the Population Health Sciences Institute, the Faculty and the University as required by the Dean and HNERC Director.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience 

  • Ability to contribute to the research agenda in Nutrition and exercise science as highlighted by the NIHR, UKRI and other major funders 
  • Expertise in design and conduct of research with volunteers, including all aspects of research ethics, governance and good clinical practice
  • Ability to conduct high quality research that commands international recognition 
  • Evidence of ability to carry out high quality research within agreed timelines, meeting project milestones 
  • Ability to contribute to the strategic development of, and delivery of, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes in human nutrition and sports and exercise science across the University 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to provide leadership in teaching and research
  • Excellent record of publications in high quality journals suitable for REF submission 
  • Evidence of collaborative inter-disciplinary and cross sector working 
  • Strong record of engagement with national or international research networks or institutions. 
  • Track record of success in attracting research funding 
  • Experience of supervising and mentoring ECRs
  • Experience of successful PhD supervision 
  • Experience of service on grant awarding bodies  
  • Evidence of ability, and willingness, to work as part of a team and on own initiative

  • PhD in Nutrition or a related discipline
  • Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) or equivalent qualification for teaching in UK Higher Education (desirable) or evidence of potential to achieve this
