Legal Data Apprenticeship

Who We Are

People have always been at the heart of St. James’s Place, we value long-term relationships, and we are a home for people who care about the future – financially, environmentally and socially. These core values have enabled us to become a leading FTSE 100 Wealth Management company.

Our Apprenticeship Programme is a fantastic alternative to university and a unique opportunity to complete a funded and supported qualification whilst you work within one of our divisions, gaining both valuable work experience and ongoing training as well as immersing yourself in our inclusive and collaborative culture.

This structured development path is delivered alongside support from your line manager and the wider business. You will be an apprentice with us for one year and then you will be in a position to take a role within your chosen division.

Location: Cirencester

Salary: £20830

NB: Assessment centres for this vacancy will be run on 12 March 2024 so please ensure you are provisionally available to attend.

As part of the role, you will study towards an apprenticeship Level 3 Business Administration.

The Data Subject Access Request (DSAR) function sits within the Legal team and is responsible for dealing with all DSARs submitted to St. James’s Place. The Legal team is a larger team of 14 employees, who are responsible for providing legal advice and support across the St. James’s Place group.

A DSAR is a request from an individual to see a copy of any data that the company may have collected to do with them. Individuals have a legal right to request to see their data and understand how it is handled and so it is important that requests are responded to and delivered within the statutory timeframe.

Individuals may submit a DSAR for a number of reasons. This could be because they are simply curious or unhappy or unsure on how and why their information is being used. A reason for submitting a DSAR is not required and anyone can make a submission.

A failure to adhere to the statutory timeframes for responding to a DSAR may result in St. James’s Place being censured by the Information Commissioner’s Office, including the risk of fines being levied. Failures in process may also result in amounts of compensation for distress and inconvenience being paid to data subjects.

As an apprentice in the team, you will help to co-ordinate the business’s response to DSARs in accordance with our statutory obligations (pursuant to the Data Protection Act 2018 and the UK General Data Protection Regulation). This is an important regulatory function with the opportunity to take on responsibilities from day 1, build up significant knowledge of the UK data protection landscape and over time to progress within the DSAR function and beyond.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Assist with the management of DSARs in accordance with the requirements of the Data Protection Act 2018 and the UK General Data Protection Regulation.
  • Assist with the collection of relevant personal data from locations across St. James’s Place, determined by the scope of the data subject’s request.
  • Assist with the review of information collected prior to dispatch to the data subject to enable the redaction of third-party data and application of other relevant exemptions and exceptions.
  • Dispatch responses to DSARs via a secure online portal to minimize the risk of data loss.
  • Assist with queries, either handling personally or escalating to DSAR Manager where query relates to the data subject access request itself or passing on to the relevant department where query relates to the content of the information.

Who we’re looking for:

If you are interested in this Apprentice role, you will need to hold a minimum of level 4 in English Language and Mathematics and have a basic understanding of the data protection regime established by the Data Protection Act 2018 and the UK GDPR regulations.

If you have studied A level Law and are interested in furthering your knowledge in Data and Law in a corporate environment, this may be a perfect opportunity for you.

Other skills required to be successful:

  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Great organisational skills.
  • Eye for detail.
  • Proficient in MS Office applications (particularly Excel).
  • Confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Ability to work closely to deadlines.

Flexible Working

We understand that employees work best in different ways, at different times and in different environments. We value all of our employees and appreciate that everyone is unique, and at one of many stages within their career. Recognising this, we have introduced a hybrid working policy to provide greater flexibility for part-time work, job-sharing, remote working, and flexibility on hours. Our people are encouraged to work in a flexible way that suits their lifestyle where it can be accommodated, so please ask the question and start a conversation!

Research tells us that applicants (especially those from underrepresented groups) can be put off from applying for a role if they do not meet all the criteria or have been on an extended career-break. If you think you would be a good match for this role and can demonstrate some transferable experience please apply, regardless of whether you tick every box.
