Role Summary
This diverse role aims to provide a high level of customer service excellence together with a range of administrative duties in support of the library’s specialised services and collections. The role of the Library Assistant demands a vast array of competencies and skills, together with meeting the high expectations and evolving demands of a diverse customer base in a busy service environment.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
You will be required to undertake the duties and responsibilities detailed below.
- Provide effective and efficient frontline customer service at all times including face to face and online issue desk duties
- Engage with the Library Management System, LMS (Koha) to undertake all frontline customer transactions
- Provide specialised support and assistance to internal and external customers to ensure they can maximise their use of library resources
- Effective enquiry handling and referral to appropriate sources and colleagues to assist the needs of staff & students.
- Administering the acquisitions process, including sourcing, ordering and invoicing of specialised library materials to support the learning, teaching and the research needs of the RCS.
- Accession and maintenance of periodical publications, (print & online) and providing accurate holdings information to customers.
- Processing and managing the provision of inter library loans via the UK inter-library loan network
- Administer the Library items overdue process, collating data and corresponding with library users regarding overdue items, imposing account charges and/or restrictions as necessary
- Processing of new stock to ensure that all items are easily identifiable within the library collection to facilitate customer access.
- Maintaining existing library stock including shelving and shelf tidying thus ensuring efficient access to all materials.
- Liaising with library colleagues, working collaboratively to support and participate in service development and planning.
- Supporting the marketing and promotion of Library services and events via multiple online and print channels

- Extensive experience providing Experience of working in a Library excellent customer services environment (preferably in HE)
- Good working knowledge of digital, Experience of web-based Library print & audio-visual resources in a Management Systems library environment Previous academic/special library First class communication skills experience
