A Library Assistant is the first point of contact for users of the library. Library Assistants deal with the public in person and on the telephone, answering enquiries, assisting them in using self-service machines and public computers, staffing the council information point and signposting to other agencies.

Are you a friendly outgoing individual with an interest in people, excellent customer service and IT skills, and a passion for books, reading and lifelong learning? If so, this post based at Disley Library with some hours at Poynton may be for you. The role involves shelving returned books and multimedia, issuing items, helping people use the self-service machines and the people’s network computers, and staffing the council customer service point. See the job description and person specification for more detail. The hours will include alternate Saturdays until 1pm.
The role of a Library Assistant is a physical one. The duties include:
- Shelving and straightening books and multimedia
- Answering enquiries in person, on the telephone and via email
- Conducting children's rhyme times and story times
- Assisting with adult and children's events
- Verifying benefit evidence, administering blue badge and bus pass applications and dealing with other council enquiries
You will need to be:
- Friendly and outgoing
- Able to communicate with all members of the public
- Interested in books and lifelong learning
- Computer literate
- Willing to run events for adults and children
- Flexible, able to work at other locations if required
The weekly working hours for this role are 11.75 per week:
Week 1: Wednesday (Poynton) 9.45am-1pm, Thursday (Disley) 1.45pm-6pm, Saturday (Disley)8.45am-1pm
Week 2: Tuesday (Disley) 8.45am-1pm, Wednesday (Poynton) 9.45am-1pm, Thursday (Disley) 1.45pm-6pm
