JOB PURPOSE
We are fortunate and proud to have hydro pool facilities which are very important to our pupil’s health and wellbeing.
The role of Lifeguard/Pool Attendant will maintain the pool and associated facilities to the highest standard, ensuring that the school pool is a clean, safe and secure environment.
The post holder will work well with both staff and children and as part of a team with our dedicated curriculum staff. During hydro pool sessions, you will be lifeguarding poolside whilst our classroom staff lead activity sessions for our pupils aged between 11 and 19. Outside of hydro pool sessions or during hydro pool downtime, as well as cleaning, you may be required to provide lifeguarding for outside hirers of the hydro pool and/or assistance to the classroom teams within the classrooms.
The post holder must have and maintain a current RLSS National Pool Lifeguard Qualification as well as is the National Pool Plant Operators Certificate (or a willingness and commitment to train and pass the qualification. This is a requirement of the post).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Pool and Facilities
- To know school health and safety policies and practice including implementation of the
- Normal Pool Operational Procedures and Emergency Action Procedures and be able to effectively apply and work within them to ensure a safe and secure environment for all.
- To be trained to become a pool plant operator (National Pool Operators Certificate).
- To keep up to date with current practice in all aspects of rescue and first aid as appropriate to lifeguarding and undertake training as necessary.
- To act as a lifeguard on the poolside at all times when the hydro pool is in use during designated hours of employment and agreed out of hours school lettings.
- To undertake regular safety checks which include; water quality, and temperature checks.
- To undertake daily cleaning tasks in the pool area as well as associated changing facilities as required on the agreed work schedule.
- To operate the poolside hoist and test on a daily basis.
- To ensure associated pool equipment and swim aids are maintained.
- To be able to effectively put in to place emergency procedures when required, in a calm and professional manner.
- Communicate pool status with both administrative and classroom staff on a daily basis.

Educational Support
- To assist classroom staff with general support and supervision of pupils in the pool area and changing rooms as requested. For example, assisted handling help with changing.
- To provide support and supervision to pupils around the school, when not required in the pool. For example, when the pool is closed.
- To maintain a stock of toys and buoyancy aids in a clean and safe condition. Reporting any damaged equipment to a nominated person of responsibility to be replaced immediately.
Out of Hours Activities/Extended Schools
- To provide lifeguard services to extended schools activities during school holidays (included in term time pay calculation).
Lettings
- To keep an attendance record of hirers/outside users. Inform them when the pool is unavailable and liaise with school office/Facilities Manager
- To report any concerns relating to outside users to the nominated senior member of staff/Facilities Manager.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- To operate the pool plant, monitor and order supply of chemicals, ensuring their safe handling and storage at all time.
- To maintain the plant room in a clean and safe state and report any defects and notify the
- Facilities Manager if repairs are not carried out within a reasonable time.
- To backwash filters and test water as per schedule, keeping records of tests. Administer chemicals as required.
- To undertake and other duties commensurate with the nature and grade of the post, which may from time to time be, required to ensure the effective delivery of services.
- The above-mentioned duties are neither exclusive nor exhaustive and the post holder may be required to carry out other relevant and/or reasonable duties as directed by their Line Manager commensurate with the skills, abilities and grade of the post.

- Have and keep in date, the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (essential)
