Job description

We are looking to recruit a Literacy and EAL coordinator for a Tower Hamlets school.

Job Summary
To lead, manage and work collaboratively with mainstream teachers and support staff to plan and
deliver effective English language support to English as additional language students, to speed their
acquisition of English and facilitate access to the curriculum. To lead on and deliver appropriate
interventions for EAL students. The post holder will also liaise with teaching and support staff to
ensure the progress of students with significantly low literacy levels.
"Thinking Reading" responsibilities:

Lead the coordination of the 'Thinking Reading' Programme, using data to select
students for the programme, ensuring the delivery of the programme for each student
and assessing their progress.
Quality assure the work of other staff delivering the programme, including planning for
training needs.
Ensure that all teaching, assessment and practice materials are filed, clearly labelled,
accessible and up-to-date.
Maintain the teaching environment so that it is calm, clean, tidy and pleasant.
Visually display graphs of student progress in the teaching area to provide recognition
and raise motivation for participating students.
Highlight the graduation graphs of students who have successfully completed the
programme.
To hold regular meetings with Thinking Reading staff to ensure the program is running
smoothly.
Maintaining the Thinking Reading tracking spreadsheet and share regularly with
appropriate personnel.
Observe staff teaching, both formally and informally, to monitor the quality of lesson
delivery and record keeping.
Report regularly to the SLT member overseeing Thinking Reading and to Governors
when applicable to provide updates on progress, based on the Thinking Reading
tracking spreadsheet.
Produce reports and certificates for each student at the end of the academic year, and/or
upon graduation from the programme.

EAL responsibilities:
To plan, lead and monitor the delivery of English as an Additional Language Support
language for students for whom English is not their first language. Assess individual
student's needs including baseline testing, planning, delivering and evaluating an
appropriate curriculum for them and monitoring of progress.
Where necessary, attend departmental meetings and curriculum departmental meetings
to support departments with subject specific strategies.
Develop knowledge and keep abreast of current research in EAL teaching, including
established schemes and strategies, advising school leaders.
Develop and maintain links with parents to meet the needs of EAL students in order to
ensure that educational achievement and personal development are maximised.
Enable and engage parents and carers to give help to their own and other people's
children, informing them of what is planned in the EAL programme and how they can
support their child.
Attend curriculum area parents evenings informing parents of student's progress and
report on progress in line with the school calendar.
Exercise professional skills and judgements in order to develop and enhance the
development of literacy across the school.
Other responsibilities:
To attend full staff, departmental and other meetings with staff working groups as
requested.
Participate in training and other learning activities and performance management and
development as required.
To comply with Safeguarding and Health and safety responsibilities as part of
performing the role.
To have an understanding of the challenges and opportunities that relate to the
changing needs of a maintained secondary school.
Contribute to the overall ethos / work / aims of the School and adhere to the Oaklands
School Code of Conduct.
