Job description

Leeds Institute of Emergency General Surgery is looking to appoint two Emergency General Surgeons to 10 PA locum contracts. Whilst this is a short-term contract, there may be opportunity for this to be extended. The new consultants will join our existing team of eight Consultants, which is led by Professor Giles Toogood, Professor of Hepatobiliary and Emergency Surgery. As a unit we have worked hard to develop an exciting, challenging and fulfilling clinical job but within the job plan design there is significant flexibility available for flexible working patterns, secondary interests, academia, management/leadership and to develop elective interests. Applicants with interests in upper GI, colorectal and hepatobiliary surgery are welcomed. The post will be 10 PAs but may also suit those wishing to seek more flexible working patterns or hybrid careers. In relation to these posts, they will be available immediately and based at St Jamess University Hospital. The post holder will be responsible for delivering all aspects of acute care and unplanned surgery to adults, admitted to the trust. We have a number of unique and bespoke pathways to manage this patient cohort including a dedicated Ambulatory Surgical Centre, a separate Surgical Assessment Unit, rapid access theatre lists and associated follow up clinics and remain at the forefront of modern units delivering sub specialist emergency surgical care in the country. Job plans can be flexible around the individuals needs but include supervision and training of general surgical trainees and medical students within the AMS Clinical Service Unit. The role includes daytime (8.00-16.00) and weekend (8.00-14.00 on a 1:8 to 1:10 basis) working, without any night-time on call commitment. 2. OBJECTIVES OF THE POST 2.1 To deliver high quality, evidence based and compassionate patient care to Emergency General Surgery patients in Leeds and surrounding areas. 2.2 To make a significant contribution to the development, design, improvement, and delivery of the Acute Surgical Services in Leeds and surrounding areas, through clinical leadership and collaboration with other key stakeholders. 2.3 To contribute to research, teaching and new developments within Emergency General Surgery in Leeds. The post holder will be encouraged to facilitate and contribute to the current clinical research programs ongoing in the department 2.4 To support doctors in training within the department with respect to educational supervision and appraisal and to contribute to undergraduate teaching of students from the University of Leeds. We have an excellent track record in medical education, supervision and mentorship and training and teaching is a core element of the units mandate. 2.5 To support the Trust in its delivery of its core services, recognising the importance of local and national standards, in particular delivery of CQC standards, the 4-hour Emergency Care Standard, same day emergency care and financial sustainability.
