Job description

Duties of the Post Together with the other Intensive Care consultants, the post holder will be responsible for supervising patient management within the General and Neurosurgical Intensive Care Units and the delivery of high quality intensive care within the Trust. The post holder will also be expected to be actively involved in the governance, administrative, teaching, continuing medical education research, audit and quality improvement activities of the department. Involvement in research will be encouraged and the post holder will be able to contribute to undergraduate teaching for the Plymouth University Peninsula Medical School. The current 18 week rolling job programme is shown for illustrative purposes (see below) and may be subject to modification, by negotiation with the post holder and Service Line Director. The new post holder will work alongside, and in a similar manner to, the existing consultant body. All intensive care sessions are undertaken in blocks whenever possible in order to improve continuity of care. Day-time sessions (Monday Sunday) commence at 0800 and finish at 1800/1900. The on call consultant is present for an evening session between 1700 and 2100. After 2100 the consultant provides a non-resident on call service for intensive care. The overlap between the daytime and on call consultant ensures an adequate handover. All Intensive Care Consultants work an annualised job plan and provide flexible job planned sessions to ensure adequate consultant cover during periods of leave. Currently the on-call rota is on a 1:18 nights basis with weekend working 1:6 weekends (see example timetable).
