Since it opened in 1922, the Railway Engineering Workshop (REW) has historically been responsible for, or involved with, every major overhaul on the London Underground. There is only one REW in existence at London Underground and its function cannot be replicated anywhere else on the network! If successful, you could become part of the multi-skilled teams of engineers known for their particular standard of operational excellence.

Entry requirements

  • You should already hold or be working towards a minimum of 2 GCSE’s Grade A* - C or Grade 4 and above, including Maths (or equivalents). Applicants with an English Language GCSE at Grade D or Grade 3 will be eligible to apply but will be expected to achieve a Level 2 Functional Skills qualification in English Language by the end of their apprenticeship.

  • You must be 18 years old by the 13th January 2025 to be eligible for this scheme.

  • You are not eligible for this scheme if you currently hold or are working towards a qualification at the same or higher level in a related subject or have already studied content from the qualification for this scheme.

  • Please note that you will be required to provide original certificates and/or predicted grades as proof for your eligibility checks.

Please be advised that should you be successful in getting an offer for this apprenticeship scheme, your offer will be subject to a satisfactory medical which may include but is not limitedto: drugs and alcohol screening, hearing test and eyesight tests including Ishihara Plates and Colour Assessment and Diagnosis tests to determine colour deficiency.

Job overview
Our Engineers focus on the assets that form the foundation of our transport system.

The role of a London Underground engineering apprentice is critical to ensuring the ongoing performance and safety of our tube network.

The technological advancements we are seeing in our trains and operating infrastructure mean that we need to adapt the way we maintain our assets to keep them operating at peak performance. You will be at the forefront of these developments whilst also keeping a watchful eye on our legacy assets across the network.


What will I be doing?
As an REW apprentice, your 3.5-year development programme will be made up of various specialised engineering sections and departments, all based in West London (Acton), including electrical, electronic, mechanical and the Train Modification Unit. Our aim is to equip you with the range of skills and experience you need for your successful career. We also understand that everyone’s career is different, so every apprentice’s journey is unique. Here is an idea of what yours could look like:

REW Apprentices will spend year 1 in block release at college in the Enfield area, interspersed with targeted safety training courses and placements around the workshops to familiarise them with their future working environment. REW apprentices will also spend some part of year 2 back in block release at college with placements around their schedule. The remainder of the apprenticeship will follow a placement plan, designed, and managed by their Apprenticeship Development Manager, which will ensure maximum exposure to the skills and knowledge that they need based in Acton, West London.

Where can this career take me?
Upon successful completion of this scheme, you could roll-off into the role of Electrical / Mechanical Fitter which could lead to further career development opportunities such as Team Leader, Production Manager or Operational Manager.


You will also have opportunities to complete additional training courses. These will vary from soft skills training to technical skills training.

Many of our current REW senior management team began their career with this very apprenticeship and have worked their way up to executive level – your future will be yours to build!

What training and support will you get?

You will be working towards a Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering - Technical Support

Typically, you will be required to attend CONEL college in Enfield, as block placements to complete units that make up your You will be working towards a Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering - Technical Support Technician the remaining units will be delivered by your Assessor.

Whilst on the scheme, we’ll support your technical development through a wide range of on-the-job practical experiences and placements. We will also support your professional development through a combination of classroom-led training courses, online training courses, mentoring opportunities, and structured networking opportunities. You will receive regular one-to-one placement support throughout the programme from your scheme sponsor and your Line Manager. You will also be connected to a ‘buddy’ who will be a more experienced apprentice from the scheme.

Please pay close attention to emails and deadlines provided noting you have 1 week to complete assessments and we cannot re-issue these tests.

Assessment centres for apprenticeship roles will take place from February-April, please note that many roles only have one assessment day, and we are unable to guarantee additional dates. We are conducting assessment centres in person and virtually (role dependent).
