Marine Operator - Rothera

British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is looking for an exceptional Marine Operator to join our amazing team based in Antarctica. BAS delivers and enables world-leading interdisciplinary research in the Polar Regions. You’ll be joining our Rothera marine team which consists of a Marine Operator, Boating Officer, Field Diving Officer, Marine Assistant and Marine Biologist. You’ll help us to facilitate a wide range of operational requirements to support science. These include maintenance and operation of small boats (RIBs), incident response cover, transporting researchers and station staff to and from local islands, SCUBA diving operations, deployment and retrieval of scientific instruments and support to marine and terrestrial sampling operations.

All of our employees who deploy to Antarctica will undergo both general training and job specific training. On a general basis, this includes mental health and first aid training. But specifically, in the case of the Marine team, courses include Boat Handling and Chamber Operator.

Your main responsibilities will include:

· SCUBA diving in support of scientific diving operations

· Assisting the Boating Officer and Field Dive Officer with planned preventative maintenance of boating and diving equipment

· Performing communal station duties including cooking, cleaning and night watch rounds (on a rota basis) as required by the Station Leader

Current projects the team are working on include the preparation for the hand-over of our new Operations and Science Support building at Rothera Research Station. This ground breaking low carbon facility is set to be operational by March 2025 marking a significant leap forward for modern Antarctic scientific research.

For the role of Marine Operator, we are looking for somebody who:

· Holds a HSE SCUBA qualification (or HSE approved equivalent)

· Is an experienced SCUBA diver with 100+ logged dives (including 50+ cold water dives [less than 12oC]; 25+ drysuit dives)

· Is able to make conservative judgement calls
